I play village cricket and we have 40-50 over single innings in our league format and we struggle to bring in young players to the game, I can't see how anyone would want to play test when they could earn 5x salary for a days work at the IPL, Big Bash etc

As bob said last night England can't play spin(Bangladesh, India), can't play pace(Australia), and now can't play swing(nz). This is now a very poor England team both batting and bowling wise.

Hopefully more rain and more backbone in the 2nd innings England can draw this.

Good job they are playing this series in NZ October

I want England to lose.. If England get away with a draw and win the second test. it will be all hunky dory again. and besides I hate it when weather saves a team.

Reckon England can still lose. NZ will aim to score quick runs and try and get close to 300-350. It all depends on how the pitch behaves

Stoneman makes a half-century - then gets out next ball!

94-2.

At least we're showing a bit of grit this innings....no redone we can't see this off to a draw now

Another root 50. Another missed opportunity. Root will get 10/10 for consistency but his conversion rate is pretty abysmal.

To be fair, the bang on the hand might well have had something to do with Root getting out.

Root is mentally weak. Good player but no way near world class.

Root is world class . Hes got so much going on now.. He cant really concentrate on his own batting its all to fussed and messy. He needs to give the captaincy up. fk knows who will take it though

He averages 54 from 65 years ffs. Of course he's world class. His conversion rate is a real issue but to say he isn't world class is insane.

Making contributions to winning games or saving tests is far more important than a test average. Numerous players have/had a 54 plus average but it’s all about making the contribution to win series and that’s where Root is lacking.

He’s like the Lukaku of cricket

Which games? Name me some big games which he has won or saved. I’m not talking about a 2nd 0Di v Sri Lanka in a 5 match series.

His test average is in the 52s at the moment. I expect it to drop to late 40s over the years.
