most players in Europe have ridiculously inflated release clauses, just on the off chance. in some leagues a release clause is mandatory. it doesn't mean that's what the player will cost to sign, unless you end up in a PSG/Neymar situation. if benfica want to sell they can take whatever amount they think is enough - usually far below the release clause amount.

mind you, given albion put a £3m release clause in evans' contract it's understandable as to why you don't get the point of protecting yr assets from unwanted transfer approaches.

Getting nearly 50% back on a player who's now 30 years old. Given that we were desperate to sign the guy and the performances he's put in i'm not too bothered. Interesting that you highlight his release clause and not Chadli's or Rondon's though!

That's no problem. If we sign all the players we have been linked with in the last 2 weeks we will be spending around £250 million and that's not counting giving contracts to the 6 we currently have on loan.

In my opinion you should be spending most of your money on players who can get you goals so this fella, who i presume would be cheap, makes sense.

As we've found this season, having a highly rated defence doesn't mean much in the premier League.

Oh what we would've given for a 20 goal a season striker!

I might add that Ben Foster has been outstanding this season and should probably be in Southgate's plans but, again, it's what happens at the other end that matters.

Our defence has conceded the same number of goals as the team in 8th.

This maybe old news but we've offered more money to Jack Wilshere than Arsenal according to SSN, too injury prone for my liking.

I have it on very good authority that Butland's preference is Liverpool if they want him. Though at the moment he doesn't know if he will move or where.
