On my 21st birthday my mum wrote to him and he sent me a happy birthday letter signed by him. What a legend. My mum didn’t like football up to that point but when he sent that letter back she always kept an eye on Uniteds results and was the first to message me when he retired. Hope he not only survives this but makes a full recovery. If he ever gets to attend a United game again I’d imagine the crowd reaction will probably be louder than any goal scored at Old Trafford

I sadly suspect that given his age, a full recovery from such a trauma is unlikely. I know two people who had ICH at a similar age. Recovery tends to be dependant on where the bleed occurred and how quickly they were able to act but the stats are not encouraging

I'm not a real praying man, but I'm wishing that Sir Alex recovers with everything I've got. He's very important to me, regardless of how insignificant I am. He brought us so much joy. Get well Fergie!

My grandfather was a very healthy school principal who also taught PE as well as his main subject Maths. He suddenly had a brain haemorrhage and died the same day. Of course every incident isn't the same so hopefully Alex Ferguson pulls through.

Very sad to hear that, sorry for your loss. The survival rates are not good - particularly within a month of it happening. It’s a very serious condition - I think about 20% make a full recovery.

Let’s hope SAF can do just that - tragic news

He probably had one or more of these symptoms:

A sudden severe headache.
Seizures with no previous history of seizures.
Weakness in an arm or leg.
Nausea or vomiting.
Decreased alertness; lethargy.
Changes in vision.
Tingling or numbness.
Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.

He had a fall apparently
