We would have won the world cup

We'd have beaten Italy, not sure about Uruguay. I would predict a QF exit vs Brazil.

Then flip it and put the 2014 squad with Roy at this world cup, i reckon we would have lost/drew to Tunisia playing poorly then narrowly bounced back with a Rooney penalty vs Panama before going out with a wimper agst Belgium.

I disagree, think we'd have still got out of this group with Hodgson's England, beating both Tunisia and Panama. May have gone out to Colombia though.

Kind of forgotten who was playing for us in that team now.

Hodgsons team would have struggled to navigate the group. Might have got through but would only scrape it on goal difference or whatever I reckon. Draw with Tunisia and narrow win against Panama.

Not to say I don't rate Hodgson as a manager because he did great with Fulham and Palace this season. This squad is weaker than the last one in terms of player reputation, but Southgates off field policy has been the best for years.

Reckon we would have beaten Uruguay and Italy with this squad.

Tunisia are a top 20 or just short off ranked team in the world, they are not the fodder people have been making them out to be since the England game.

With Roy's record in major tournaments i could easily have seen dropped points vs Tunisia.

Roy is very good at clubs with no serious ambition and are happy to be away from relegation bother, arguably the best at that remit.

It's when he's at jobs with serious pressure to win (ala Liverpool and England) he looks lost and unable to cope.

All the teams that we faced in this tournament were arguably weaker than that Italy and Uruguay, with the exception of maybe Croatia. I'm not really counting the Belgium game, and had Colombia had their star player available I might include them too, but we couldn't even beat them anyway.

I know it seems harsh after we've reached the semis of a World Cup, I just think the more you look on it in reflection, the more we've been flattered. We're essentially the Germany team of 2002, following on from a disastrous Euros to reach a final by facing nobody of significant quality. They then failed to get out of a group again in the Euros after. I do hope that isn't us should we get a tougher group in 2020.

maybe so but still imo too strong for England 2018

Even 2014 England started way the better side and your goal came against the run of play.

England 2018 are pretty poor to be honest and will be remembered as such a few years from now.

When you strip it down what did they offer really? A very poor midfield, directionless forward play basically running hard to the last third before knocking it back to somebody to pump it into the box and also a fragile back line and most of all no real leader on the pitch.

The only strong point was your aerial prowess in the box which was clearly very well rehearsed on the training ground but you need far more than that to succeed.

No, because you have no world class players, Kane in a team of of world class players can be phenomenal, he is a lineker.

At the end of the day a semi final was way above expectations, England is a very young team and will mature greatly from this experience, the Euros is a definite possibility.

It's certainly going to be interesting. Before this tournament I not only wrote the team off as they are currently (which is probably the poorest squad ability wise of my life time) but also on the limit of their future ability.

They've shown something in this tournament and they've got youth on their side. I still personally have my doubts about a lot of the players though

I think you need to get Lallana back in.

Costa Rica also beat Uruguay and were cheated out of a semi finale by the cheating Dutch.

I’m trying to work out what Harry’s role was in the last match. Was it an attacking MF? Anyway, I found Gary Lineker was often in the right place at the right time. Lurking around the 18-yard box or near to the goal. Harry Kane puts in more effort than Lineker ever did (though he was noticeably absent in the Croatia game).

The 2014 team were utter crack, as was the manager.

It may not be that important, but it is what it is. So may as well take it seriously.

Would Spurs for instance put out a reserve side in say their last game of the Prem season, if they could not move in the table whatever the result. I would certainly hope not. And would supporters want to watch them, even though there would be nothing at all on the game, of course they would.
