What if the ref DQ's a fighter for something that was unintentional but the referee saw it as intentional? Is that fair?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Like what? An eyepoke? Not sure how that could happen tbh.

However, if officials make mistakes then that's a different scenario from a fighter bungling a fight on his own. As with all other sports, officiating mistakes are taken mostly on the chin. But mistakes by players or fighters are always punished.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's say Francis pokes Stipe in the eye once and gets warned and then Francis does it again accidentally and Stipe complains to the ref and says he cannot see out of the eye. The ref could deem the 2nd eye poke intentional and that would qualify as a DQ, so Stipe retains his title.

The refs in the UFC are ok but there are some guys that continue to make bad officiating decisions.

I recall something similar happening in the Jones vs Johnson fight , the only difference was, Johnson carried on, instead of taking the DQ and winning the title.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I remember that I think but maybe Johnson wasn't hurt too bad and maybe Sterling was hurt badly. We can't be sure. A knee to the head is a big blow that often leads to a knockout when done properly, and you might feel fine immediately after but then get your lights shut off when the next punch lands.

A chin can be like a gas tank, keep getting hit and you run out of gas and get put to sleep. The accumulation matters.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have no compunction about the legitimacy of Sterling's blow. Maybe he did exaggerate but I certainly believe the initial blow hurt and dazed him.

posted on 27/3/21

Agreed Guv. Call me a coward but if it was me I would not continue if I feel the knee has caused any damage. Sometimes an illegal strike doesn't land properly and you're ok so should try to continue, but if I feel an earthquake in my head I would take the W.

Sterling had already been hurt by that point and he was probably heavily fatigued, so a knee to the head would certainly have had more of an effect than if it happened in round 1.

The bantamweight division might just have tipped the lightweight division as being the best in the UFC.

Khabib has gone and Tony looks like a shell of his former self. The division is still stacked but not as much as it used to be.

Yup.

Why can't Khabib try another weightclass. I see other dominant fighters moving divisions to get a new challenge if they've cleaned out their division.

How do you feel about Chandler getting the title shot?

I personally don't like it, because I think Dustin should be fighting for the title BUT, if Dustin was offered the fight and he chose Conor, I would be more amenable to Chandler competing for the title.

Honestly, I think it's because his father died and his mother doesn't want him to compete anymore. He has cleared out the division and was done at lightweight too.

I think if his father was alive, he would have kept fighting.

In terms of moving up to 170, I think he would be too small for Usman. Ii could see him beating guys like Woodley or Masvidal or even Colby but Usman is too big and his wrestling his too good. There comes a point where the size differential supersedes any skill advantage.

posted on 27/3/21

Yeah, Adesanya found that out when he was grounded by a much bigger fighter. Size matters.

They should have given Gaethje the shot ahead of Chandler perhaps. I would have liked to see Khabib vs Oliveira too.

i think dustin not getting the shot 99% confirms he wants another easy payday

posted on 27/3/21

He probably thinks he'll certainly get the shot again in future so why not go for the money first?

I'm not too sure. I'd like to hear Dustin come out and say that he took the Conor fight instead of the title.

I've seen Dana pit fighters against each other and it wouldn't surprise me if a title fight was never offered to Dustin.

Possibly but I have a feeling Conor will beat him in the trilogy fight. I could be wrong, because I thought Conor would beat him in the 2nd fight but I just think it's risky to take the money fight instead of the title.

Dustin could have fought for the title and then defended against Conor. Two big pay days. Now, if he loses to Conor, I would bet my life that he doesn't get a rematch and instead, Conor goes straight to the title.

Hope stipe dominates ngannou again tonight

posted on 27/3/21

I like Ngannou and his story is incredible but I'm hoping for a Stipe win too.

posted on 27/3/21

I expect to see an Ngannou exploder.

And the way Stipe crumpled in the DC fight, you know the one, I'm surprised Ngannou hasn't already folded him.

I'd be happy to see him as champ fighting Jones.

Would Stipe get an immediate rematch?

Jon Jones at heavyweight doesn't sound like a wise decision to me. I think he will suffer a KO at some point.

Jon jones looksedhuge in the pictures he put up this week, him vs stipe would be so fun

Winner of this fight will fight jones.

He has been waiting in the wings and packing on the weight, so it will be interesting to see what he looks like.

WOOOOOOOOW!

Francis Ngannou is the UFC HW champion and I fear for every fighter that steps into the octagon with him now. I knew Stipe was done when Francis defended the 1st takedown and took Stipes back, that showed the elevation in his game and at this point, if you cannot take him down, you are going to sleep because nobody can take his shots. He looked so patient and composed and credit to Stipe for taking some big shots but ultimately, Francis had worked on his weaker areas and now he is a formidable fighter. Jones vs Francis next? My pants are around my ankles right now.

Luque was impressive him in win over Woodley and he showed he belongs with the best guys in the division. Woodley needs to retire now. I know he looked aggressive in this fight but he's not the same fighter and he has lost his last 4 fights. Hopefully he can get another win and ride off into the sunset.

Omalley vs Almeida went how I thought it would. He was just too sharp and precise for Almeida and he could have finished the fight in the 1st round but he got too cocky. I used to be a fan of O'malley but the Vera fight and the excuses he made following that fight turned me off. Despite that, his skills and ability are legitimate and it will be interesting to see how he does in a division that is full of killers.

Only watched the main event. Really liked how nganou defended the takedown. Was sceptical as to whether he’d cleaned up these areas of his game and still tests to come but was pretty good signs. His performance was incredible, really happy for him.

posted on 28/3/21

He has now defended takedowns from Blaydes, Cain and Stipe. I don't see anyone taking him down in that division currently.

Also Dana saying Jones would face the winner in the pre fight press conference and then downplaying Jones and mentioning Lewis in the post fight press conference

Pperfect example of Dana contradicting himself and a lesson for all to never take what he says as fact.

posted on 28/3/21

Tbh I’d take that as negotiation tactic given Jones show me the money tweet just after fight
