It was a close fight, so it certainly wasn't a robbery.
Hugging? It's mixed martial arts. Islam had his back, which is one of the most dominant positions in the sport. I have no issues with people having it a draw or Volk by 1 round but let's not disrespect the performance by Islam.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am sorry my friend but there is being dominant - and there is stopping someone else from fighting while basically doing nothing, or in what was quite often the case getting your face caved in while hold on for dear life, only in the 1st did he actively try to do anything, and even then Volk was completely comfortable. I know what dominant on the ground looks like.......that wasnt it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd suggest going through the scoring criteria.
MMA isn't boxing.
Having someones back is one of the most dominant positions in the sport. It doesn't matter if the guy isn't hurting you, you are being controlled. Volk was trapped in that position. If someone can get you trapped, it's control time.
Islam wasn't just holding him either. He was working for chokes but Volk was doing a good job defending. Why do you think the ref didn't stand them up?
I dont disagree that Islam won according to how point scoring is atm - I think that's wrong though
And thats the problem though Guv, we give to much emphasis on the ground game, and too many people don't fight, and that needs to be changed. Yes he was trying for chokes and holds but was never successful, and that's why the ref didn't stand them up which is fine - BUT he was never close, so why should he basically get "bonus" points for trying......
And in the later rounds he was only doing minimal work so Volk couldn't punch him in the face more - I don't think this should be awarded. Big difference between him and Khabib/GSP for example, is they worked on the ground, they didn't use it knowing the judges will give them the benefit of the doubt.
This needs to be changed as wrestlers can now do much less and win......I don't pretend to know what the solution is, all I know is this isn't right
Simon
I agree that the scoring system and what they prioritise needs to be adjusted but they have made some improvements. 10 years ago, you could win rounds just by taking someone down but now they want control time.
The return of Jon Jones is upon us. Predictions for his HW debut?
I'm going to be slightly controversial and say Gane beats him a decision victory.

Honestly Guv I don't think that, is that controversial tbh. I think it's only the Jones fans massively bigging him up. I am actually with you and I don't think he has done enough, and struggle like Israel. Don't get me wrong Jones is good, but he was good and a weight bully. Also imo he lost 2 of his last 3 fights and only got the Dana White bonus point cos I know lots of people love him. I honestly also don't think he is dedicated to the fight anymore and feel he is gonna gas quickly. Again I could be completely wrong about all of this but he has years of ring rust as well as going up a weight class.
That's the intrigue with Jones because he's good enough where a 3 year lay off and extra weight might not make a difference. I personally think a lot of his physical advantages will be negated at HW and Ganes movement and quicker feet will give him problems.
be interesting to see if Jones can carry the weight and still perform but i think if Gane wins it'll be via a stoppage. Gane doesn't have a massive height or weight advantage
3 years is a massive amount of time out, he could come out and destroy gane or he could gas in a round and be taken out

Precisely.
Made Gane look like an amateur, far too good on the floor
Thank god I didn’t stay up for that.
Well in the internal words of Shania "that don't impress me much"
Good win for Jones and I am sure all of the JJ fans will eat it up, but he really didn't look comfortable. Probably the best time as the division is weak, lost a lot of the big draws.
Let's talk about Rakhmonov though, what a great fight.

I take it you didn't see the fight.....and yeh top guy cos all the good ones left, it's like trying to big up Chelsea's victory yesterday
Wow.
Jones cements his place as the GOAT. I predicted a Gane win and I knew Jones was the favourite but to get the victory in such swift a decisive fashion was hugely impressive. I think Gane was shocked too and it goes back to Jones skill and ability. I can't see anyone beating him in that current HW division.
Co main even was a surprise. Grasso made Valentina look slow on the feet but Valentina done well to adjust and the grappling was improving the difference but the way Grasso capitalised on the chink she saw, was beautiful.

He looked comfortable enough after a 3 year lay off and a new weight class. I would have liked to have seen more but from what we got, I don't see anyone in the division beating him.
That Francis fight will always be the one that got away.
Rakhmonov is a good fighter but I think the hype around him isn't warranted. He takes too much damage and against the elite guys, he won't be able to keep being as reckless.

Maybe but it was a fun fight for sure, but he took the big shots well, Neal has some power and I think a few of those shots shut some other fights down. Not a great card overall I will admit, but a couple of OK fights.
UFC 286 predictions:
Usman via UD.
I think this will be the most competitive one but I think the wrestling from Usman will give him the edge.
Fiz via UD
I think he will be too active for Gaethje. If this was 5 rounds, I'd favour Gaethje but I still expect a war. Fight of the night.

Leon should win this with judges
Co main was a war as expected. Gaethje is one of the toughest guys we've seen in the sport. He takes everything and keeps coming forward and his shots do so much damage.
The main was an interesting fight, I personally had it 3-2 Usman but it was a close fight and I have no issue with Leon getting the win either. Leon has improved a lot and his takedown defence was impressive. Let's see how he does against Colby next.
