For Flashy's benefit:
"Winning the Championship should have ensured that Chelsea became the first English participants in the inaugural European Champions' Cup competition to be staged the following season. Indeed, they were drawn to face Swedish champions Djurgårdens IF in the first round. Chelsea, however, were denied by the intervention of the Football League and the FA,many of whose leading members were opposed to the idea and felt that primacy should be given to domestic competitions, so the club were persuaded to withdraw"
Real Madrid then went on to win the first 5 or something.

What the fack has that got to do with the OP?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both speaking on teams missing out on european competition and where they would be now and what could have been. Keep up.
It's about as relevant as where Millwall would be had they won the FA cup final in 2004. Has nothing to do with the ban imposed on English clubs.

I never said you did.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He wasn’t implying that you had. He was simply stating that he didn’t think Liverpool fans were solely to blame for the ban.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK fair enough. Why would Liverpool fans be blamed for it, sounds a bit far fetched
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What are you playing at? I find it hard to believe that anyone on a football forum has no idea what happened at that time. So what are you waiting for someone to say?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know what your problem is. That question was more rhetorical and in support. Why would you have such a defensive attitude.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
However what IS very relevant is that but for the ban on the English Clubs, Chelsea would have been one of the qualifiers for the UEFA Cup in both 1985-1986 and 1986-1987.
That said, the team that I have always felt sorry for from that period, because they had a superb team that would have won European silverware IMO is Everton.
Liverpool fans have flown a Steau Bucharest 1986 European Cup flag at Anfield in the past, to mock Everton
Wrong on so many levels
EC winners during the ban
86 Steaua Bucharest
87 Porto
88 PSV Eindhoven
89 Milan
90 Milan
91 Red Star Belgrade (English clubs were re-admitted this season, but champions liverpool had an extra year ban, so no english club in the EC)
in 87, and 88 I'd say the best team in europe was the quinta del buitre Real Madrid team (lost in the semis both seasons)
from '89 the great Sacchi Milan team emerged
I think Everton may have had a decent chance of winning it in '86
After that i think the success of the English clubs may have waned anyway, especially after Milan emerged in the late 80s.....that team profounded changed the way football was played ...
i remember watching a pre-season friendly in the summer of 86 or 87 (can't remember) between the Quinta Del Buitre Real Madrid team and Everton
Madrid annihilated Everton 6-1
