Spurs Doing Better Than This Time Last Year

posted on 25/9/18

Will everybody just calm down. The season has only just started. The prizes are not given out in September. I will be very surprised if Spurs are not there fighting for trophies come the back end of the season. Also rather controversially, Arsenal were written off after just two games, and I expect them to be up there or thereabouts if they get their away form sorted, which they already seem to be doing better than last season.

Then we are fairly facked if we don't sign anyone imo

Overdramatic or what. Get a grip.

He's our best central midfielder Sandy. If you don't think that you need to get a grip.

It's the exact same broom we used last year... Same handle, same head, only difference is that the bristles are more worn!

We are not Ace that's the problem. This team and group of players have proven year in year out that they don't quite have what it takes to go that extra mile and win a trophy. Adding not one single player this summer was probably the most ridiculous thing I have witnessed for a long time, when you consider how well our rivals bought (Liverpool especially) who have leapfrogged above us this season.

How can we go from being on par, or slightly better (judging by our league finish ) to Liverpool being a lot better? It's because our summer window was atrocious and Liverpool bought brilliantly. They have improved and we haven't. Why should us Spurs fans be content with not winning anything every single season? To me it seems spurs fans are quite content to being nearly men every season. Not actually achieving anything, which is pretty ironic when one of our mottos has "glory" in it. I'm sick to death of it. I want us to bloody win something ffs!!!!

I don`t even mind a bit of overraction, but it should come in May at the end of the season. Not six prem games in, and still in September, with the club still in every competition, and sitting just outside the top four as it stands.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

With respect Sandy, at various times last season you were calling for Poch's head and saying this group of players will never win a trophy. Then, despite us adding no new players, you were telling all and sundry that Surs were nailed on PL and CL champions this season. Your reactions and opinions veer to the extremes more than any other Spurs fan on this forum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

With respect Ace that was last season. New season, new broom. Every fan in the world changes their opinions, so not sure why you think I am unique. It is the way of the game. I did not actually call for Poch`s head, I merely said he had to up his game. Nothing wrong with criticising the manager when results take a dip. Football is not all about praise. I am not sure if I actually said this group of players would not win a trophy. If I did, I have since changed my mind. Opinions are not set in stone are they?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not a new broom though, it's the exact same manager and group of players, many of whom had no rest and little preseason between seasons, so I don't see how we're gonna go from being bottlers who've got no hope of winning silverware to multiple title winners in a matter of two months.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn`t say the team, I meant me. Honestly are you seriously saying every football fan gives an opinion and it is set in stone for his lifetime. Have you never changed your mind on anything, let alone football in your life Ace?

Don, the problem is you are saying the every season mirrors each other, and it clearly does not. Chelsea have proved that last few years, they can go to Champions, drop down to 12th and then come back and win the title again. The previous season really has little bearing on this season. Different scenarios always come into play, injuries, form, etc. You cannot say just because Spurs have not brought any players, they will automatically not do as well as last season. Football just doesn`t work like that. Fulham have brought loads, as have West Ham, are they going to finish above Spurs?

Chelsea are proven winners sandy mate, Spurs are not and have proved that every single season. Chelsea can have a bad season by their standards, but go onto win the league the season after. Spurs just don't have that mentality or the minerals to win anything. Chelsea buy players and improve most summers, we have stood still. We don't even compare to Chelsea mate, who have won more trophies in recent years than I have had hot dinners. Chelsea are serial winners, Spurs are the complete opposite.

I'm not saying Fulham or Westham will finish above us, but you can't sit there and tell this Spurs side who have proven every single season that they don't have what it really takes to win silverware, will suddenly rock up this season and win trophies.

Don, I have a lot of sympathy with some of your views, but please don't forget that Chelsea and Man City have benefitted from billionaire tycoons who have literally thrown ridiculous money at the project in order to be successful.

Man Utd have a long history of being successful and wealthy.

I know that no one like to hear this, but the fact of the matter is that we are and have been punching above our weight. It's not so straightforward to call Chelsea serial winners as Spurs bottlers.

I agree mate, but unfortunately that's the way football is these days. Liverpool have spent big this summer to compete. If we want to be part of the big boys mate, we need to start acting like them. I'm just fed up of our underachieving all the time.

I get your point Don, about Chelsea being winners, and Spurs always seem to not get over the line, but as Gezza-Spurs said, Chelsea have thrown billions at it. They can afford to spend say a couple of hundred million and if that doesn`t work, then they spend another £200 million, and so on until they get success, same with City. Most clubs just cannot do that.

Do you seriously want Spurs just to spend, spend, spend, still not get any success, and end up in serious financial trouble. I don`t.

But I do get your frustration Don. I myself would like to see some trophies, it has been to long. But there is no real magic formula to winning them.

Liverpool have spent big, but they still have not won anything. We will not really know until May whether their spending has been good or completely reckless.

True, but you can't say they ain't looking good mate. Beaten us at Wembley plus PSG. They are serious contenders this season.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Between them and City I'd say. Can't see Chelsea sustaining the same level over 9 months. Utd have too many issues, Arsenal and us will be battling for top 4. Only thing with Liverpool is managing multiple comps. Klopp has come unstuck with that before, like when they imploded the other January, or last season dropped off in the league because of CL. Their squad depth is better now, but I do feel an injury to VVD would cause them major headaches. Gomez is good and improving, but you don't feel the likes of Matip or Lovren are gonna command a defence to a league title.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Far too early Ace, to say it is will be a two horse race. Lots can and usually does happen over a 38 game season. Sure they have started off OK, but other than Spurs, who just had a really bad day, Liverpool have played no teams of note. The game at Chelsea will give a truer reflection of how good they are.

posted on 25/9/18

Oh and before you say they have also played PSG, well they are not that good, they would struggle in the Prem to hold a top six place down.

They've started better than OK. They should certainly be up there in a title race now and I'd be surprised if they didn't win something at the end of the season. Even if they don't, they've leapfrogged us and will be better equipped to win the title for the foreseeable future.

They did spend £400mill so clearly they wanted to invest to push on.

They're just doing what they needed to to catch up with City, unlike some of us.

Totally agree we r, we totally blew the title in that Leicester season: Leicester we're not even that great. We will never have a better chance of the title, especially with City who are clearly going to dominate for years. Liverpool are the only real contender for me. They have leapfrogged above us.
