Trophies are overrated..

The point that I;m trying to drive home is that football is, first & foremost about entertainment. It's a form of escapism for working class fellas such as meself. So when one goes to the stadium, one expects to be entertained.

But because of the immense pressure to win titles, we've seen clubs like PSG & Madrid obsess over winning trophies & splash obscene amounts of money on players thus creating a bubble & inflating transfer prices.

They hog all the good players & the average ones go for obscene amounts thus placing immense amount pressure & expectation from said player.

You also have teams who play mind numbly boring, soul crushing brand of football because they're scared of losing. Who loses out? The supporters.

This all in pursuit of a Trophy & so called ''Glory''. All in pursuit of a fleeting moment at the end of the season/tournament. I'd rather support a side that plays mind blowing football & wins a handful of trophies, than a team that plays ''anti-football'' & scoops every trophy that's there for the taking. Thought?

This is madness.

If you support a team like mine, those "fleeting moments at the end of a season" are memories you treasure and they live with you for a lifetime.

Yes you want to be entertained - and we often lose sight of that - but if you're not focused on winning something (anything) then what's the point?

And anyway, winning breeds confidence which results in players playing in a way that tends to be more entertaining.

I beg to differ. If you understand the history of Associated Football, then you'd know that football is first & foremost about entertainment. It's a form of escapism for the masses, the proletriate. The bourgeoisie hijacked the working man's game & turned into what it is today.

The reason why such importance was placed into winning trophies is largely because trophies (or so called glory) increases a club's profile, which in turn means more revenue (i.e sponsorship, merchandise, tv rights etc). It's just another example of bourgeoisie hijacking something that was created by the proletariat & enriching themselves along the way.

No, football was created to be a sporting contest and therefore from its very outset was designed to have winners and losers. It's the very nature of sport and without that competitive element then it would never have captured the publics imagination.

Here are a list of teams and their qualities:

Good football + trophies = Man City
Medium football + Trophies = Chelsea
Bad football + Trophies = Man Utd
Good football + No trophies = Arsenal
Medium football + No trophies = Spurs
Bad football + No trophies = Liverpool

Based on your preferences and my analysis of info and data, you should support Arsenal.

Us at United value trophies first, football last. You prefer football first and trophies last, you sir, are an Arsenal fan and need to get the HELL out of my club. You are destroying the very fabric of our club, which is winning TROPHIES.

Nice of you to join us briefly, now CLEAR OFF!

Only fans of a small selection of clubs would write a post like this. It's the sort of thing Liverpool fans were writing after they left their virtual monopoly of the league behind them too.

What you refer to as ''memories you treasure'' is what a call ''fleeting moments'' & ''living victoriously through others''.

When the players lift trophies, get shiny gold medals, bonuses & endorsement deals at the end of the season, what do YOU get in return? In fact, me girlfriend once asked me this before & I couldn't answer her. I hope you can.

Did you google "football forums that look a bit like the bbc from about 8 years ago"?

Welcome, btw.

I'm pretty sure Arsenal have won trophies recently though, last time I checked we won the FA Cup in 2014, 2015 and 2017

We'd all have taken Liverpool's 17/18 season over ours, even though the net result was the same (fock all). The argument gets harder when your team has played some poor football over a season and won something big (like when Chelsea won the CL or Liverpool in 05). I bet their fans couldn't care less about the season as a whole and look back on that year with great fondness.

And what do you get from watching your supposed entertaining football? Again, are you not living vicariously through others?

What do parents get when their children achieve something? It's the same principle, isn't it?

What do I get? I get a feeling of joy, that something that I've invested a lot of emotion in has seen success. Our connection to our teams can't be rationalised - it's a lifelong emotional connection and it means a huge amount to see the team win something.

You mean the mediocre trophy the big clubs don't care about? We are too busy concentrating on the CL and qualifying for that. Something Arsenal should try more of. Small club mentality Arsenal.

Would you pay money to watch a boring movie that happens to be critically acclaimed & has won multiple Oscar awards? Entertainment trumps glory everyday of the week.

You're comparing apples and pears.

Sport is by its very nature competitive. People don't watch sports that aren't competitive. That's the key element.

Liverpool are by far and away the most entertaining team that don't win anything. Spurs and Arsenal from 05-13 sucked.

How about the paralympics? It is very often the ones that come last that provide the best entertainment?

No, people do not watch sports that's NOT entertaining. Why do you think some sports are more popular than others?

All sporting codes are competitive (you said yourself) but some are MORE entertaining than others (i.e golf is competitive but know where near as entertaining as Basketball).
