It’s Cantona. His was the signing that built an empire, created a dynasty and changed the complexion of English football. Yeah, Utd were talented, but it was Canonta’s maschismo and impetus that took them from sleeping giant to the pre eminent force in British football and well on their way to the globally commercial juggernaut they have become.
Kante, Makaleke and Vieria (Arsenal weren’t winning titles before him, they’ve not come close to one since him, that’s impact), all follow.
The moral of the story here, but French.

Michael Carrick
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Before we signed him we were struggling to replace Keane, and were playing strikers and defenders in midfield. As a result, we were behind Chelsea and Arsenal and people were saying our glory days were behind us.
We signed Carrick in the summer of 2006 and won the next three league titles (and a Champions League for good measure).
i get the impact stuff because it's obvious VVD has had a big impact at the club, albeit over a relatively short period
However, yesterday some of your fans on here were claiming he's already Liverpool's greatest ever defender, i suggested maybe he hadn't achieved what others like Hansen and Lawrenson for example had achieved and was informed that trophies mean nothing when making player comparisons cos Djimi Traore won a CL, I then explained Traore wasn't a mainstay in a successful side like the aforementioned
So my question is, is VVD Liverpool's greatest ever defender?
Liverpool always were strong in defence due to Klopps system. It was just the shocking goalkeepers that were causing Liverpool to concede goals.
Its a bit like Guardiola Man City. There defence was fine but having Bravo who couldn't save a shot most games was killing them. Similar to what happened at Liverpool under Karius.

I am starting to think Liverpool winning the league won't be a bad thing. Might finally wake Man Utd players up to knock Liverpool off their perch. What greater motivation next season.

Hafis reluctance to move from Alisson is having a bigger impact on this thread than VVD could ever dream of having at Liverpool
Cantona.
He was the piece of the puzzle Ferguson had been looking for and turned us from a very good title challenging side to the best side in the country for many years. He was also a huge influence on the kids coming through who would go on to be prominent in us winning the treble.
There have many quite a few better players than Cantona in the PL era, but none with the influence he had on one team.
Van Dijk is clearly a top top player and making a big difference to Liverpool but he's got a hell of a long way to go before you can compare his influence to that of Cantona's.

Huge errors by other defenders also. The whole backline was a complete mess when under pressure. VVD has brought so much calm to the backline. Karius even improved massively with him there. Alison has actually made more errors leading to goals than Karius and Mignolet combined in the whole of last season's PL.

Shut it you racist scuuum.
I'm starting to resign myself to Liverpool winning it this season. They're going to do it sooner or later, so it might as well be now, while we're out of the running.
And at least it will mean City don't win it.
As said earlier, let’s just be thankful City didn’t get VVD
Would be unstoppable
Spurs don't deserve it and Man City winning it is lesser of the two evils but if Liverpool won it it won't be a bad thing as they are one of the best sides I have seen.
I don't think Liverpool can get much better as they look like they can win ugly and win blowing teams away which is something Liverpool haven't had.

Wow how cringe is this article
I also wonder if Liverpool won the league if Klopp might fancy a new challenge and go back home to manage Bayern who will probably end up without the league title for the first time in ages - since he last took it off them

true. vvd has made those around him much better. has lovren made a shocker this season?
"They're going to do it sooner or later"
Hard to know, history has shown that Klopp sides do run out of steam because of the intensity that they play with. It can't really be sustained for a long period. Who knows how they would react to losing this title along with the CL defeat last season.
How Liverpool and City do in the CL will have a huge say on who wins the league this season.
