Without reading any other reply it is Cantona. SAF buying him shaped the next twenty odd years of the Prem.

Lot of sh*t coming out of Merseyside today
Our two academy boys made VD look stupid for our goal last night.
In fact the hype (its only January) is pathetic.
Robertson and Alexander Arnold are no better than Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines were - look at them now!
Biggest Impact Ever : Liverpool winning the lottery after mugging off Barcelona for £170 million for Coutinho last January.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So what you’re saying is, that you thought you were going to win after getting the first goal, and you still haven’t recovered from the absolute mauling you received after it? It was like a heavyweight fighting a featherweight, the big guy let’s the little guy get the first punch in, just to give him a little dignity, then proceeds to pummel his head in.....

Pretty difficult to argue against Cantona. Without doubt, he was the springboard to a sustained period of dominance for United. If VVD has 50% of that, I’ll be delighted.
Cantona for his mesmerising abilities. And the aura he had on the pitch.
That smugness, was often backed up. And this was before the days of 2 hours of rehearsal fancy celebrations with your best mate team mates.

Not a wum question. Was VVD considered a world class player at Southampton, or just a good one.
I ask because it seems to me players only become ' world class' if they join a big team, or so it seems.

hi manu, long time no see (posts that is ) hope you had a good christmas. from what i heard vvd was destined for greatness by the scottish fans when he was up there.
Most overrated player in the league. Klopp has sorted a lot out since he's joined, now a hard working team with a consistent defence and VVD is a great organiser and vocally his impact has of course been fantastic, but individually as a player the way Liverpool fans and pundits talk about him is cringey and laughable.

Here is a question.
Even if Liverpool win the league, what's VVD done that Terry, Vidic, Kompany etc didn't do?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Check the stats. It’s abundantly clear.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stats say Carvalho made a bigger impact. Won the league and on track to make a better defensive record in comparison to the season prior.
Stats, that's settled
Van Dijk should never have signed for Liverpool in the first place. At the time, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Man Utd were all better options. Weird decision.
VVD is a phenomenal player but I don't think he is single handedly doing it at Liverpool. Likes of salah are the reason most trams don't let their players attack in numbers, ably supported by likes of mane and firminho.
With regards to impact then the likes of Zola and vialli and even the likes of dicanio changed the way football was played and footballers trained and lived.
For a team cantona changed the dynamic to a point it's a legacy
Sorry but vvd isn't close.
Cantona in the last 3 months of 95-96 is the closest thing I have ever seen to a player single handedly dragging a team to a league title (and FA Cup). We so often laboured and it did get to the "just give it to Eric" stage. He loved and thrived on that responsibility and had a point to prove after the Selhurst Park incident. Maybe not the best player the PL has seen but still possibly the most inspirational
You’re all sucking VVD off. Bit cringe

Hi Mont.
I will owe you and GB a tenner, which will teach me not to make bets before any signings are made.
I won't renege, so when it's definite I'll ask admin how to do it.

Van dijk is a great signing and fair play, he’ll probably help you win the league. Makes you wonder if city had been successful in signing him. They’d never have looked back either. In some ways the league should be thankful Liverpool signed him instead of City
----------------------------------------------------------------------
City were already the greatest ever team without him Robb
As brilliant as vvd has been Allison is arguably as important this season for Liverpool as the Dutchman has been
Hell even shaquiri is looking like a brilliant piece of business
