Road tax was abolished in 1937.
Road tax, which we’ll now refer to as VED, is calculated based on the amount of CO2 a vehicle emits. Gas guzzlers pay more than low-emission cars and electric cars. A bicycle is classed as a vehicle in law and if bicycles were to be charged Vehicle Excise Duty they would pay the same as Band A cars: zero – that’s why you don’t pay tax for a bicycle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spot on we all pay taxes towards the roads not car drivers alone

If I was really being a diick (which I generally am) I could calculate how much car drivers owe me in tax due to me paying for roads that I don't use and they wreck with their cars, meaning I have to pay to fix them. Could prepare a bill and a payment plan. But I'm extremely busy.
It's so odd how things that irritate people are so out of perspective.
If you had to ask people to rank what annoys them more - red light jumping cyclists, queue jumpers, drivers doing 35 in a 30 and people putting their feet on the seats on a train, I'd wager that the drivers would come out bottom.
Yet it's the only thing that genuinely endangers people's lives.

Because bad drivers have always been a thing so people dont feel the need to talk about something that everyone has already had to get used to
The numbers of cyclists on the road has increased pretty drastically over the last 15 years or so, so people aren't as used to having to deal with dangerous cyclists
Eventually people will get used to it and then we'll see articles popping up about dangerous hoverboard riders, dont worry

I think it's because the root cause of the anger towards cyclists is entitlement. People think, when in a car, they have more rights to the road and don't like being held up.
They'll then rationalise that dislike with the sort of nonsense we've seen on this thread, but in reality that isn't the actual reason for their feelings.

It's always interesting reading the facebook comments on an Edinburgh Evening News article whenever there is a cyclists killed on the roads in Edinburgh. 90% of the comments:
"Cyclists skip red lights"
"Poor driver, cyclists are a menace"
"Well, you get what you deserve"
"How do we know the cyclist didn't crash into the car?"

This morning on my 10 mile cycle I witnessed -
2 cars jumping red lights
1 car & 1 lorry in the cycle lane
3 cars turning without indicators on
1 woman walk out on me without looking
1 car stop in middle of the road to check phone
0 cyclists jump lights
1 hoodrat on a boris bike on the pavement
Get off your high horses humans are morons in all modes of transport stop singling out cyclists ffs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Speaking of high horses, do people who ride them pay tax?
Plus they $hit all over the road causing hazards for motorcyclists and cyclists alike
Car drivers are insured, or should be, pass à test, possibly taxed, and have to obey many laws or get punished. All that is as it should be.
Cyclists suffer few of the above restrictions but cause a reported more than five hundred injuries a year.
If anyone suggests even a small restriction to diminish that figure they are portrayed as unreasonable, because there are other bigger problems, as if we can only look at one thing at a time.
And those figures show it's more than irritation Winston, and your question related to them

You haven't taken onboard a single comment made, have you?
How many of those injuries were the result of law breaking by a cyclist?
How many of those incidents were a hit and run?
These are very important when you're considering licensing.
Drivers are licensed and insured because of the scale of damage they do every day of the year.
Try applying that logic to cyclists. You can't.
And tax? The greatest myth of them all. The average cyclist pays more tax than the average driver. Anyone who raises tax in the driver vs cyclist debate is, I'm afraid, lacking in credibility for their opinion.
Of course not, never read the Mail.

But I'm not the one proposing licensing.
Seems reasonable to me, to expect people to be able to back up a request for a new law with more than just a whinge about seeing cyclists run red lights and not get punished.
I do know someone whose wife was badly injured by a car. The insurance company paid for all the modifications to the house, adapted car and care while the husband worked.
I don't know anyone injured by a cyclist, but if it happened they would not get the same.
I will ask again, should anything be done or be left as it is?
