So we must wait for somebody to be badly injured, who will need care, by an uninsured cyclist before we should consider it. I don't agree.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope, didn't say that.

You need data to support your view. One off incidents are not data.

Declan, yes I am for taking measures to reduce accidents. Which is Whigy I think that there should be restrictions on cyclists on footpaths and pedestrian areas. There are usually children and old gits like me who wander around as if they are entitled, which they are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you for reducing the amount of cars and reducing the speeds on roads then? If cyclists are not to be allowed on shared use paths, and not provided for separately?

Going forward, cars are the lowest priority in planning, in cities and in new developments etc. The priority hierarchy is

1. Pedestrians
2. Cyclists
3. Public transport.

.
Cars

Looking back at arguments like these in 20 years will be interesting.

There are a lot of kant cyclings.

There are a lot of kant drivers.

Cyclists have more of an effect on pedestrians than drivers do though, and that's why the reputation is so awful for cyclists.

Most are completely law abiding that I see in London. Some are obnoxious kants that need to be put down.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

How many pedestrians - on the pavement - were killed by cyclists vs drivers last year?

It's amazing how people's perceptions on this are so far removed from reality.

Footpaths and pedestrian streets are not shared use, they are for people on foot. Or at least the ones where I live are, they have signs.

No, it's not his job to know that and like many police officers I encounter, they don't have a clue about it.

I never claimed that my friend being hurt is the basis for my opinion. My research is.

There are restrictions. It's against the law.

My wife's boss was cycling to work several months ago and a car nearly took him out when he was trying to go straight ahead and the car was trying to go left. He remonstrated with the driver of the car who then proceeded to drive over the top of him and drive on. Broke his collar bone, amongst other injuries.

The point is that there are some idiot drivers and some idiot cyclists. The system we operate here is not a safe one for cyclists regardless. If a cyclist makes a mistake the chances are the car driver won't get injured, however if a car driver makes a mistake it can be very dangerous for a cyclist.

Last year down the road from where I work there was a cyclist waiting to turn left and a lorry pulled up next to him, then proceeded to drive over the top of him and killed him.

And I guarantee you that when reported, there would have been lots of comments about how 'cyclists don't help themselves' etc.

Cyclists shouldn’t be allowed on the roads.

Those are both horrible incidents. Hope both have got a decent amount of jail time.

They are liable to pay for the damage.

Happen much, does it?

My research says it does. But the culprit cycles away to avoid paying

Also lots of cyclists don't use the designated cycle path and still cycle on the road.

Both were in their 60s. I don't believe looking out for cyclists on your left was part of their training and test when they took them.

A friend of mine told me that his mother got her license by filling in forms and never actually had to take a test.

Cars in cities, large towns should not have priority. But for longer journeys they are invaluable. We went as a family to Chambery last week by car, fuel cost c 180€ return.
Four return train tickets c560€ plus the hassle of crossing Paris.
We need a mix of all, cars, public transport, bikes and foot. But not everything is black and white, my mum always caught the bus to Prestwich for shopping, but as she got old it became more difficult , so for the last three or four years of her life it was taxi ie,car.
