Not been in this situation before but the first thing I’d ask is if you have settled the debt yet?

If not get it done and chase the company to update your credit file as settled.

Worse case scenario I believe and having at times checked my own scores is I think that only the last 6 months (might be 12) are visible without a deeper search.

Either way get it paid and it may have accrued penalties so be prepared for a sore one if its an old debt.

I paid the 4 quid off ages ago, it’s just that and for it to severely affect me in getting a mortgage is pathetic. I had no warning or any letter from the company alerting me to pay this amount either. It’s a joke.

And for them to charge me a delivery fee on a product which I returned on the same day to the postman is a joke as well. Most of these companies usually have free delivery in place as well.

You can appeal against it I believe and request the credit score company remove it from your files due to its considerable adverse affect.

I think even then you’re better waiting at least 6 months before trying again as you’ll have the failed and rejected application also on your files now.

I think.

Who refused you a mortgage?

I’m going through a broker and the lender instantly rejected my application because of a ‘bad history’ with the applicant. They couldn’t say much because of GDPR blah blah, but I instantly know it’s because of my credit score.

I haven’t been able to get a decent credit card the last two years either and I always wondered why, so I signed up to experian and I’ve seen these waaankers have been giving me a terrible rating because of this bleeding £4 delivery fee.

NatWest also told me I seem to have a very bad credit rating when I was shopping round for a mortgage.

If the fee was valid and was outstanding for a period of time then sadly you will have to accept the dent in your rating ans wait for it to improve.

' just didnt check' isnt going to convince a lender to give you £100'000's

Having little or no credit history can have as negative an impact as having a considerable credit but paying it back on time.

What did your bank say to you when you told them this?

That’s crap, if I’ve got an outstanding fee for so long with a shopping website then they should be sending you letters to alert you about it. Even if it’s something as small as 4 quid.

I was a first time buyer and I instantly returned the item on the same day, I also assumed these idiots are like amazon and just provide free delivery anyway.

I’m using a broker Kneerash, he’s looking over my credit report from Experian and Noddle. He said it’s something we can appeal to Barclays to because of the amount being so small.

It's all Algorithms now basically, it's why you get approval in pronciple in hours, so I'd be shocked if it wasn't anything but this bad credit history that stopped you assuming you have the required deposit etc.

I don’t understand how a car company can instantly give me a PCP deal straight away after I assume them doing a credit check on me too.

OK defo try appeal it and even talk directly to the bank if you can. If it's just due to this 4 pounds than you have a strong case to get it removed, and it's in your interest to do it because even if you wait it out there is still a bad credit period on your profile and like I said when applying for any credit the algorith will reject you instantly if you have bad credit on your profile.

I work in a bank and while not on the Mortgage side I worked on digital sales products used by the Mortgage teams use to sell customers mortgages.

Credit scores aren't just based on one factor such as a late payment.

Late payments do count, but are just one piece of the puzzle. You need to have a good length of credit history, good amount of credit readily available, don't use too much of that credit, don't have a lot of recent inquiries on your credit history, don't have been declined for loans or credit cards.

You don;t automatically have good credit because you've never missed a payment, you have to work at building it up. No one will lend you 100's of thousands of pounds if you have no history of managing debt responsibly.

This happened to me from Bt Sports mobile around 14 months ago.

My score plummeted from 600 odd to under 200 because i cancelled the direct debit after 12 months not realising they had recurring policy.

They kept sending mail to my old address and i didnt even realise till i checked my credit score to find a default on it for £12.

Fuming.

A case like yours is an example of while the move to digital is now faster than ever you still need human interaction to deal with a case like this, like 4 pounds meaning you can't get a mortgage!

No worries, also try keep your bank account/s in as much credit as you can (as T Bone says above) and keep it as clean as possible, like even small transfers out and in could be questioned.

This is why they say to get your credit in check before applying. Experian and clear score are both free to check. Simple things like not being registered to vote can affect your mortgage application, you really have to have everything lined up.

You can get the company to request to remove bad credit, it happened to me a few years ago when they tried to take payment twice for car insurance. But that was their mistake so they had to agree to it, in this case you had a debt even though it was small that you didn't pay. But if you explain the sutuation they should be willing to help you out.

T bone?

He's out smashing mirrors.

They also want to know the mortgage is affordable. Say you pick up £3k pcm but come next payday you are down to your last few pennies this would have a negative impact.
