There are runs to be made on this wicket once you get in, and our batting line up is better than theirs, so I expect a big first innings total, the Aussie bowlers are your average county trundlers without sandpaper

Knock your head off and chin music stuff to surface today

This innings felt very similar to India's first innings in the series here last year. 140 odd from their best batsmen to a score in the 270-280 with late wicket partnerships adding more runs than they should have.

We have to appreciate that Smith produced a great knock that has possibly got his side up to a par score. It would have been trouble if they were on say 250 and the last 2 wickets got them up over 400.

England now need to produce with the bat and they need their top 6 to do the bulk of the run scoring and treat anything from Bairstow down as bonus runs considering he and Moeen are in poor form.

I'd make the Aussies favourites now. I reckon that's a good score between these two sets of batsmen and bowlers (generally very good bowlers and rather dodgy batsmen). Obviously it will help England if Anderson is passed fit.

does this Roy have the patience to get a big test score?

I would make Australia faves. It all depends onto days play. If England can bat all day.we will be on par. Its matter of one of Burns or Roy being there at lunch.

So after one day and one or maybe two decent batting performances including Siddle you've written us off

He has the one day techniques to hit a big score...whether he's allowed to do so remains to be seen

What do mean ‘allowed to do so’?

It isn’t a case of being allowed to do so. Test match format is totally different, he can’t just smash it like he does in white ball format. He’ll need to know when to play and when to leave the ball

Pretty sure he's been picked to dominate at the top of the order. Whether it's a success or not remains to be seen.

Nothing so dramatic. Just having a guess about which team is favourite.

If I was having a bet it would be on Australia.

But I've lost plenty bets before!

Hopefully Australia will need to turn to Lyon today and he will be the key. England will want to target him so they can't rotate the 3 seamers with Lyon bowling from the other end for the majority of the day.

Anyone of the opinion that Alastair Cook retired too early at just 33 years of age? Especially when there was no other banging the door and he was still the best opener in the country?
Think he had another good 4 years left in him.

There is too much stress in modern cricket. Pre-2000, most players retired when they were close to 40.

Cook retired at exactly the right time IMO
