no coincidence that bairstow has been a pretty pants test cricketer since impressing as a one day opener, clearly cant do both. No room for him and Buttler in the test side, he has had plenty of chances and has flopped time for him to be replaced, he has been good with the gloves in the series but Foakes and Buttler are superior glovemen
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure Buttler is necessarily a better keeper than Bairstow, but I think he offers more as a specialist bat at the minute. Bairstow is a brilliant fielder though, so it would make more sense for Buttler to take the gloves and let Bairstow in the outfield.
That said, Buttler is a specialist at scoring quick runs when he has a good platform laid by the top order, which is a situation we're never in, so it seems odd to have a specialist for that hypothetical situation. And you know my views on Bairstow as a test batsman.
Pope offers more than both at the moment - much more reliable runs, much higher ceiling and he can even be a backup keeper if needs be. I want to see Pope in at 6 in NZ.
After watching the first 2 overs, this pitch is as flat as it appeared.
Aussies will get 400+. Would be amazed if Smith doesn't get a ton.
We are never going to get Smith out on this pitch.
What is Buttler playing at? Leach has been solid, just bat sensibly ffs.
Shame Butler couldn't make a century.
England's Test side needs to be remodelled. They should identify Test-style players and stick with them.
It may mean that Ben Foakes, who looks like a classical Test keeper, comes in and someone like Jonny Bairstow misses out.
Spot on from Vaughany
Australia overate yesterday was awful. It was like 12.4! Even with the extra half hour they were 8 overs short. Surely the captain should be fined for this.
what exactly has butler proved despite getting 70 there, that he can play a one day type innings? still don't see him as a test batsmen
Arggh Marsh gets the last wicket.
Burns(c), Sibley, Northeast, Root, Stokes, Pope, Foakes(wk), Broad, Leach, Archer, Anderson

294 not enough on this pitch
Absolutely pathetic to not even get 300 on this wicket.
Australia to bat until about lunchtime on Sunday now.

Although I would have Broad as captain. Don't want to burden burns with it.
Broad will be worse with reviews than Root is

the fact it could have been even worse for England had they held on to their catches and bowled as good as they have in previous tests the Aussies. Goes to show the quality of the opposition is irrelevant to an extent with the state of this England test side riddled with one day players, who have just come out of winning the world cup as well. No adaption to their games whatsoever. Even Root supposedly our best batsmen is driving at everything and horrendously out of nick.
