Thing thats been disappointing about not being able to get Smith out is that the aussies openers are out within 5 overs so hes practically facing the new ball every innings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Smith knows he can just wait for our best bowlers to tire and prey on our weaker ones. Root is far too predictable with how he sends bowlers in - for example in the last test Broad and Archer were really up for it and had Australia four down for not much by tea. But rather than bring them back on for a burst after they had had a break at tea, he rotated the bowlers and bowled Overton and Leach which was far too easy for them to score.
Today, Broad has bowled badly (probably knackered) while Curran has looked very threatening. So after a break both Curran and Archer should be bowling to build pressure. Instead Broad is relieving the pressure every other over when Archer is bowling, allowing Smith to take it easy.
There hasn't been a single point in this series where England have bowled consistently in the channel just wide of off stump and dried up the runs to build pressure on Smith. Instead he can just wait for the ball that strays onto middle, or one pitched too far up, or one that's wide and not quick enough to trouble him. The captaincy is the problem, and I don't really blame Root, he hasn't captained much before being England captain. Someone with experience should be picking the field and instructing the bowlers though. And they should be bowling for test cricket.
Everyone going on about Australia's bowlers isn't pointing out that they bowl bad balls too. The issue is that they all put the ball in probing areas consistently, so one mistake could get you out. Whereas England's bowlers are always looking for miracle balls, trying slower balls, trying bouncers, trying cutters, trying inswingers and outswingers and as a result they're not getting into a groove and they'll keep delivering the odd bad ball which is easy to put away. England need one plan, and to stick with it long enough to give it a chance of coming off.
Faak sake Smith dropped. Not easiest chance ever but at this level got to take it.
That was the game. Smith out there and they would have struggled to get 200.
So predictable, every facking time.

Archer and Curran bowling nicely.
Curran gets his reward and gets rid of Paine.
Curran is class. Has been excellent today.
with Curran and Archer the future does look bright in terms of seamers. both offer something England have lacked in the past. those two along with a economical swing bowler in anderson is a great trio
And another although Australia reviewing it.
Aus batting is horrendous
Looks plum. Can Curran get a hat trick

It's a mystery how England select bowlers. Why Overton was picked is beyond me. Woakes was bowling well and has been messed about, now looks short of confidence, Curran performed brilliantly when he played and then got dropped for no reason.
Bowl a full straight yorker now.
Great bowling from Curran
The difference between Root being dropped and Smith, is that Root didn't go on to make a 100.
Curran doing the business. The lad is dangerous in all conditions.
Makes the Overton joke selection even worse

Curran can score runs down the order as well, which let’s face it, is probably as important given our batting
Fackin Smith...still there...like a bad smell

They literally picked him because he once got Smith out. It shows how hopeless their plans to get Smith out are.
