Some harsh judgements on here.
Missing one of the best bowlers in the world and Woakes not right either.
Massive impact on the game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Picking Anderson when he hadn't played a game all season (and it is August, not June), was a massive miscalculation (read balls-up).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed, but I was more referring to the criticism of Root and the bowlers yesterday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Roots captaincy was awful yesterday.
Having the oppo. 128-8 and now looking down the barrel, ................ the stereo joy of supporting both Derbyshire and England!
Poor umpiring decision overturned on review.
The umpires have been disgraceful this match. Unnacceptable decisions at times for both teams.
BBC
"Absolutely shocking from Joel Wilson.
Up there with the worst of his decisions from an all-round poor Test.
It only just hit Joe Root on umpire's call in line with leg stump and was missing by a mile.
Umpiring is really tough and they get too much criticism usually. But this has been a dismal officiating performance."

Roots captaincy was awful yesterday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why?
Don't see how Root is to blame for yesterday. Not his fault he doesn't have a world class spinner and his best bowler is out injured. So he's left with Woakes, Broad & Stokes.
He used Stokes quite well, wasn't the surface for Broad or Woakes as ball did very little. Moeen was awful and him & Denly looked more threatening but again they're part timers.
That's the thing about Moeen, isn't it? He says he doesn't like being referred to as England's #1 spinner - too much pressure, or something daft like that - but he can't bat either. Some all-rounder.
Anyway. I'm even boring myself about Moeen and Bairstow at this point.

Woakes only bowling 7 overs
The field when Wade came out to bat
Root bowling the 7th over of the day
Lack of ideas
The lack of energy
I read quite a few England fans left out of protest at some of the poor captaincy decisions he made. He will learn, but yesterday will go down a poor day for Root and I suspect some will be offering so private words of advice.
Moeen's done a decent job in the recent past. He just doesn't look right at the moment, confidence has totally gone.
Probably could do with some time out and gain confidence at County level...
cant believe how awful these umpires have been. wow
And, to be fair, some clarity and consistency about his role in the team. It can't be easy being moved around the order so much. In a way it's no wonder he looks like he doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing.

Fair enough.
I think something happened with Woakes and I think it's harsh to judge him on the basis of what was going on yesterday, personally.
I think he needs another spinner the other end to get the best out of him. Preferably left handed.

I'm only saying he had a bad say as captain. Not saying he is a bad captain. He is young and new to it so still learning. He is the right man for the job IMO.

Tbf Roy lasted longer than I thought
Hmmm, I agree with choosing Roy but he clearly can't play international test standard.
Denly, time to prove your worth in this team.
He played at that like he needed a six off the last ball to win a 20/20 game.
Brains of a rocking horse.

It was letting the Aussies off the hook in the first innings that was the problem, at 120 for 8 Root put all his fielders on the ropes instead of attacking, gotta kick them when there down
