Oh dear me the England boys are upset. We are always told we’re victims who overact when we complain about offensive songs directed at Liverpool. Well you can’t have it both ways boys so get over it. Liverpool FC fans see themselves as anti establishment and there is nothing more establishment than playing the national anthem at at a club football game. What next? Do we start playing it at Prem games?

You don’t prove your pride and loyalty for nationality by a bunch of tick box exercises. I’m sure all the England hoolies sing along like good little boys. Does that make them respectful of the country?

TBH I find all the drunks singing the national anthem all day at a Test Match offensive but I don’t whine about it.

There’s a lot to be proud and ashamed about being British and freedom of expression is one of the things to be most proud of. Perhaps you would rather not have that and make everyone sing along

Incidentally I doubt Queenie or any of her crew could care less

Boo, the anthem, maybe a British born Muslim burns flag....

It's not a problem.

Freedom of expression

Well yeah. No skin off my nose. The sooner we start forgetting about ridiculous icons like flags and anthems and demanding respect for them the better. I prefer to judge a country on its actions not its flag. North Korea has a flag and an anthem. Should I be respecting them too?

Amazing

That article, like KLS's comments earlier make it pretty clear the booing is supposed to be provocative, the fans doing it know it'll get attention and want it. Let's not pretend that what they did isn't controversial, because judging by the reaction it quite clearly is.

Whether they're right to do it is a matter of opinion of course. Obviously they have the right to express themselves however they wish, but with that comes the reality that others have the right to voice their opinions on what they do, and so on.

My personal take is that the issues raised in the article are not being addressed by football fans booing the anthem. If anything it'll make the perceived divide between 'Scouse' and 'English' larger. We should be looking to build bridges right now, not smash them. Aiming this piece at a Tory is impactful, but misses the target market of real people that they alienate when they do this.

Im not a fan of his but did JRM make any comments about it?

It's a weird way to write an article

'This famous Tory hasn't said anything about this but I imagine his reaction would be like that. So heres why his imagined reaction in my head is wrong and why hes a posh tw@t with no understanding of Liverpool'

It seems to be largely based on his kids being Pool fans

It's just a weird way to write an article and even though the author tries not to, it comes across a bit like hes attacking JRMs children

Also he mentions Boris has made bad comments about Hillsborough in the past. Why not address it to him?

You need a focus to start.

Some national pride, local pride or community pride. Starting to boo an anthem, then burning flags is next.

Then what, blame current political parties for what’s wrong in the world. I grew up under different PMs, but always had respect.

I have visited liverpool in the 80s when the facking witch was in power and the city was like a slump.
The facking tory right wing caants done absolutely nothing for the city.

Boris Johnson the russian, turkey( Turkish grandfather) PM with his anti mersyside views have added to the hate for the tory cockney caants.

The city has been improved since I went back many times after the rebuilding with europe 's money and the help of the Labour party.

Why would any proud liverpuldian sing a anthem about a German queen (I have nothing against Germans).

An anthem should be about the people and the beauty of the county.

The same happened with the other Northern cities. Wonder if they will boo when they get the chance.

Like a large portion of career benefit workers who were shifted from unemployed to ‘disabled’ under Blair and have given us a benefit generation that drains the life out of this country.
