That's why he stays in the team!

Speaking of stats, I wonder how our running stats compare to last season.

When a garbage player has your best stats (even dubious ones like this) you know you're in trouble... Smh

Loving the first two comments to that piece.

"Are you able to share any details as to how this is computed, and how it relates to xT (negative contributions aside)?"

"Sure thing!

xT is a discrete Markov chain (?) that looks at the next 5 events and is based on 192 location bins.

PV is an XGBoost model that looks till the end of the possession and is based on continuous locations + all information of the last 5 events. Similar to 'xG added'."

Hafi is going to have orghasms over this

Andreas Pereira is our best player.

..................

Goes to show how reading stats to judge how good a player is, is very foolish.

When you watch him he doesn't look very good at anything at all. He has now had ample game time to stamp his authority in the team.

He just hasn't come up trumps.

And I hate using that word.

VC, I'll admit that most of what I've seen of him is from his two stints in Spain, but he looked pretty handy over here - technically accomplished while bristling with energy, aggression and power, quite a leader on the pitch whenever he was given the opportunity. Has he not shown any of that over there?

Perhaps his development has stalled completely, maybe Jose/Ole haven't found the best way to fit him in and make the most of his game, or it's just that his game's better suited to the Spanish league - but do you think by now he's a no-hoper considering he's still 23?

Absolutely not.

No, not in the slightest.

The only players in our side I can honestly say he has been better than are Young, Matic, Lingard and Lindleof.

McT has come along much better than him.

No this stat isn’t an arbitrary one like assists and that is just your old fashioned ego thinking you know more than anyone else and the lads with PhDs in Mathematics who dissects games frame by frame couldn’t possibly be right.

Take a look at the leaders in other teams.
Salah, Felipe, Mahrez, Gylfi, Grealish, Son, Zaha, Maddison. This is clearly a decent measure of a player’s worth to a team.

Don’t know what you’ve been watching mate. Plenty of energy, aggression and technical ability. Wasted on the RW and without a CF to boot.

Viva/VC, I'm surprised to hear that. Also showed a good range of passing, decent vision and a good delivery. Think it was his decision/making that still let him down a bit, but not much more than you might expect of a 20/21-year-old.

He is indeed technically good, has a good engine. For some reason though he just doesn't seem to influence games at all.

One thing I will say is that he has a very good delivery, which is why it pīssed me off no end that Young was on set piece duty for the whole Arsenal game.

If I had to rank our CMs I'd probably put him 3rd:

1)Pogba

2) McT

3)Periera

4)Tell Carrick to get his kit on

5)Matic

6) Find out what Djemba-Djemba is up to these days

7) Fred

He lacks a bit of skill to beat his man, can be clumsy in the tackle and sometimes doesn’t move the ball quick enough but you’ve nailed his some of his best attributes above

As would I but only because McT is a different type of player.

Issue being that he hasn’t played in midfield yet this season. Mata or Lingard have occupied the #10 position and Pogs/Matic/McT in the two. In some games he has fleetingly been moved central and looked much better for it.

It really isn't. But if that is what you want to pretend, then fill your boots.

What makes you think he is a midfield player?

Even when on loan in Spain he was played out wide.

One thing that caught my eye about that list was that it's predominantly made up of attacking players. Not surprising when you read its description that says it "attributes credit to players based on their contribution to the overall probability of their team scoring a goal," but it's a bit misleading when they simply title the list "Best player by team".

There are obvious intangibles in the game that I don't think bare stats, however sophisticated, are all that capable of picking up on - let alone the fact that a full-season sample size of 38 matches or, let's say 80-odd goals, is still relatively small - let alone 7 games.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because he played centrally for our youth teams, for Granada and for us in pre season. Valencia used him to plug a hole on the right same as we’re doing now.

"I played out wide in the beginning then, after that, I played more as a no.10 and, then in the last two or three months, I’ve played as a central midfielder," he told ManUtd.com.

"It went well and I think I have found another position.

Spain-based journalist David Cartlidge has followed Pereira's progress carefully and described the Las Palmas display as 'another hard-working, disciplined performance. Great work ethic throughout in box-to-box role, broke up play, tracked runners, covered danger zones and also broke with pace on counter. Very mature display. Granada would be lost without him.'

Mainly wide, but also drifted infield at times, perhaps to open up better passing angles.

Regarding what benched said about skill to beat his man and not moving the ball quick enough, those are both aspects of his game that La Liga is probably more forgiving on, so it kind of adds up.

I think we have been to be honest. I'll accept he has a bit of energy, but he just isn't up to the standard of what we are looking for. He put in a decent cross for a goal against Chelsea but apart from that he has been ineffective.

He was also a disaster for me when he played as a DM last season.
