No spinner and bairstow playing instead of pope 🙄
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unbelievable. Guess that had a part in the decision to bowl first. Pope dropped for Bairstow is ridiculous. What will that do to the guy's confidence?
Pope is ill.
England not bowling brilliantly so far....
Not bad start, Curran the best of the bunch.
Getting them out for under 200 would make us favourites until we are 10-4 at lunch

Oh missed that, thought everyone was alright now.
De Kock currently in one day mode, riding his luck somewhat, England need his wicket soon or he could undo all the good work so far

Still no excuse for Bairstow to be playing.
They dropped him so he could go and score red ball runs and force his way back in. They called up Crawley to be the reserve bat in case an opening arose.
An opening then arose, so did they put Crawley in at 3 and shuffle everyone else down 1, as was the plan? Dd they fack. Instead Crawley gets the boot again and Johnny sodding Bairstow - dropped to score red ball runs, and having scored precisely ZERO red ball runs since - gets to jump straight back in ahead of Crawley.
It's just comical how bad the selectors' strategies and decision making are. And you can facking guarantee that, whether he scores two double tons or a king pair in this match, Bairstow will be in the lineup for the 2nd test. They'll probably drop Sam facking Curran and bring Pope back in. No way will they drop Bairstow for Pope (which is what they already said they were doing) - can't risking hurting precious Johnny's feelings.
Ugh.
Well played de kock. They're well on top now with his counter attack innings
Curran again. He's bowled well. de Kock misses out on the ton.
Bairstow should be playing instead of Butler, he`s a better test bat and Butler batting form in tests is shiete

... Just no.
Bairstow has been a dreadful test bat since the end of 2017. He averages well below 25 in that period with over 20 scores of 20 or below.
Buttler averages a shade over 35 since his recall in 2018 (we're talking tests only here) and he was our bat of the year in 2018.
I simply don't understand why Bairstow is rated so highly. The guy is not a good test bat on the basis of the last several years, and he's a temperamental sulky priiiick to boot.
People need to get over the lazy line about Buttler being a white-ball slogger. He's a once in a generation talent in white ball cricket, true, but he's also a professional and dedicated test cricketer who's MASSIVELY improved his game.
Based on his batting, Bairstow shouldn't be getting in the Lions, let alone the test side. The bias shown his way is absolutely astonishing.
Pope was ill so no other choice. Wouldn't have picked Crawley. The real weakness in this side is no spin bowler.

Wouldn't have been against Crawley at 6 to be honest. He's been there in the warm ups.
All wrapped up, well done Broad and Curran. If Anderson and Archer can get to somewhere near their best then we should be very competitive in this series.
burns gone 11-1

Philander such an underrated cricketer over the years.
their bowlers showing us how its done
made it to 50 only losing 2 wickets. not bad
these two are the partnership. both will get out around the 70s and then they'll be a complete collapse
