Wow.
She is spot on. She's talking about something I often see clearly happening but I can't explain it, but she just explained it very clearly.
Its hard to talk to them about what they are unaware of. First you have to make them aware, which is next yo impossible and then educate them.
The definition of the word racism/racist also need to be looked at. A lot of cretins are escaping the dragnet because they don't fall within the definition.

Also I believe the woman in the video is saying she believes things which she doesn't, to try prove a point. If she believed them, she wouldn't have made the video. Good intentions but I don't believe her.
I feel that shes basically saying if you're white, you're a racist. This is racist in itself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
She's a doctor in that field so she's giving an observation of how she understands the world shapes her world view. She said we are all influenced one way or the other (white and black). She's also speaking in hindsight after studying this for decades.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was influenced by a lot of things growing up(in Northern Ireland during the troubles) but that influence didn't impact my views. I didn't have the views that the majority on both sides had. People are different. It doesn't matter what colour they are, their colour doesn't determine their thoughts. You cannot say every person of a particular colour has been influenced and therefore has underlying thoughts due to that influence. People have their own minds also. As I said before, this is exactly the sort of thing the actual people who do have these thoughts and who deny them use to prove their denial is correct.

Well going by what this woman says, the definition is simply if you're white, you're a racist, is it not? Or is there something I'm not understanding?

Great point. She didn't say white people are racist by default. She's describing the system. Also your exception isnt a rule. I'm sure you know as much as i do there are people who vote DUP or Sinn Fein for no other reason than which side they are born on. Which goes back to the point, that is the system and many people dont see anything wrong with that. I live in NI and wont pretend to understand the nuances, but i definitely wont try to explain them away. I just want non black people to also have that view towards racism- in that you cant fully understand it from our perspective and dont try to explain it away with your logic from a different background. We can all learn from each other that way if we dont think our point is the most valid.

That's fair. I just don't like the insinuation made and I think it gives people that she describes an example to back up their views.
You are completely right in regards to voters for the DUP/Sinn Fein and the people who vote for them don't see anything wrong with it but what about all the people who don't vote for them, which is increasing all the time, as evidenced very nicely by the last vote? Are we ignoring those people and saying by default, Protestant's in Nothern Ireland are systematically voting DUP based on influences? I would never dream of voting for them but if I look on my Facebook I see absolutely ridiculous reasoning for why friends are telling people we should vote for them which displays the underlying tone we speak of.
We're risking tarring everybody with the same brush with opinions like this. I have no problem with the suggestion that many people have feelings which portray underlying racism but it feels to me the lady in the video is suggesting that everybody has these feelings, which is not true at all.
I know it's not true myself as I had these underlying views growing up, through my teenage years, into early twenties in regards to other races and religions and I learned differently, firstly having made friends with foreigners, living with a few for a couple of years(those were the days) and then marrying my wife who is foreign also. I learned the underlying views I had were there, even if I didn't consider myself racist, or in this case xenophobic. So I can tell they are not there now as I know they were there before. This tells me that yes, many people will grow up with these views but many will also gain knowledge which rids them of them.
Therefore rather than pushing this on people who deny having them and giving them a way to justify their denial, it's about educating.
Asking a question which suggests people are racist for suggesting a black player is rubbish at defending does nothing to educate anybody and other further distances people.

Fantastic point. I can tell you're not just saying what sounds good. I agree with all of it. What she is saying is we have all been influenced as we grow up. Some of us have learned different to those influences. She isnt saying all white people are racist but asking that they should maybe take pause and think about what they say sometimes. You've said it yourself, you had views you didnt even know were a problem. That's who she is talking to. You cant do a talk on every specific scenario except the group you are trying to reach. If you know you're not racist, this doesnt apply to you. You clearly have a mind of your own and are a critical thinker so you're fine. It's the blind masses who we need to reach.
Also about the recent NI vote, it was very refreshing . I'm sure you know i was making a general example of the type of thinking im highlighting.
The OP wasnt pushing this on anyone, but merely making an observation about the general landscape. It'd be a shame get lost on the Mendy example when a great conversation has been had here tonight

Also about the recent NI vote, it was very refreshing. I'm sure you know i was making a general example of the type of thinking im highlighting.
The OP wasnt pushing this on anyone, but merely making an observation about the general landscape. It'd be a shame get lost on the Mendy example when a great conversation has been had here tonight
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well perhaps I shouldn't have focused so much on the example but I just found it silly.
"If you know you're not racist"
I felt like the lady was saying that even if you believe this, you still have underlying feelings of racism. Perhaps I got it wrong.

Saw your latest article however it was closed before I was able to comment.
It is clear however that you're trying to push a completely different agenda to the one in the link you posted. The Ian Ladyman article criticises the media for jumping on the bandwagon before all the facts are collated. That the media coverage on the issue, prior to the investigation on the alleged incident being concluded, only fans the flames of the racism debate.
Your article however essentially stated that if a black player reports a perceived incident of racism and it transpires that no evidence of racism comes to light then they should be forced to apologise. Even going so far as to say that this is as bad as racism itself, which is ridiculous.
In fact the Ian Ladyman article states and I quote "If it never comes, it doesn't mean nothing happened or that Rudiger was making it up. Rightly, the German was taken at his word".
You however seem to be pushing that he was making it up, dare I say it in attempt to downplay the whole racism issue itself? Hopefully this isn't the case and I'm sure you'll be able to clarify

I have never said that at all. If you actually however see what Rudiger wrote it comes across like he knows who it was even saying there were two individuals. The fact that straight away he has shouted racism amd the whole furore afterwards I think Rudiger should make comment about it again maybe saying he may have got it wrong.
The media are so quick to judge yet no comment afterwards if it may not have happened which could well have been the case in this instance

----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's fair.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fantastic point.
Anyhow I've made my point. Better get back to arguing about VAR. Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes you got it wrong, now shut up and go back to VAR! Hahaha. Just messing lol, goodnight.
