I think the vast majority would claim not to have known, but in truth we'll probably never know.
There seems to have been a fair degree of hate whipped up and it's scary how the public bought into that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Happens all the time, even today Winston. Perhaps not on the same level but it's incredibly easy to breed fear amongst a populous and turn that into hate.
See Brexit.

Churchill killed millions of Indians and no-one gives a fvck. They celebrate him in fact.

I don’t think he ‘killed them’. He diverted food from Bengal to feed Allied soldiers as there was a war on.

Yeah took all their food and killed up to 18m of them. Did similar to Ireland and the guy was a bonafide racist.
It was when I heard that rather than gassing babies they’d throw them directly into the furnace that the true evil of it all really hit me.
Scary what humans can be persuaded to.
It wasn't just the Jews, remember.
Mentally disabled, homosexuals and gypsies were also culled.
What amazes me is that genocide still continued after this. Cambodia, Africa, Kosovo, Yemen... It's crazy that humans still wipe out thousands of defenceless and innocent men, women and children.
We really are a facked up species.

Pretty much everybody at that time was a racist by today's definition.
Judging the past on today's ideals is misguided. Rape was a necessary part of human existence for example.

Something that gets overlooked is they murdered another 5 million people. See below.

But the comments tend to take a moral highground type position - in truth, any British person living here in that era is likely to have had a very different view on the world (and other races) were they born into that era.
In 100 years, a lot of what we say and do will be considered abhorrent probably.
