I’ve been to Auschwitz.

It’s a harrowing experience. Numbing almost. The sense of insignificance in the presence of history is almost impalpable. It’s an eerie place, not one I would want to go to again, but a place I would recommend everyone visits once.

It’s certainly worth visiting.

I actually found it hard to comprehend. Partly the scale of it, but also because of the tourist factors.

I’ll never forget being introduced to an outdoor space with the death wall’. Incomprehensible numbers of people shot against that wall for all sorts of nonsense reasons.

The bullet holes are still there.

It’s very clear that people should be silent and respect the gravity of what went on.

And then you see a tourist taking a photo of it.

I’ve been a a few war sites and I find the less touristy, the more upsetting. I guess it just gives you a chance to understand the gravity of it.

But certainly worth a visit. The rooms with the collections of hair, glasses etc. are just unbelievable.

Never been to auschwitz but went to sachsenhausen which is on the outskirts of berlin. Its defo worth a visit if visiting berlin, hard to get your head around it when walking around the camp. Further to that the topography of terror which is a museum all about the SS etc in berlin is by far and away the most interesting museum ive ever been to. Really delves deep into how it all started and the levels of atrocities that were carried out.

Yeah, it is pretty crazy when you see the scale of the place

How it all started is what worries me now. I truly believe we're heading for a police state, return of section 28, deportations, renditions and basically V for Vendetta.

Mad that we dont get to see all the riots abroad that are going on. I mean you dont see a peep do you? All very Orwellian and the stuff Goebels said was basically our last election. Dont get me wrong Im not talking remotely about any comparison to the Holocaust, but rather how polarised politics comes to the fore and laws get passed bit by bit.

I predicted some time ago they'd ban the right to demonstrate and that's already started. Now we see press control. They'll be one on elections soon enough imo.

The big threat now isn’t suppression, it’s misinformation.

Mainstream media can’t have the influence it once did, partly because of reducing coverage but mostly because media isn’t restricted to big organisations anymore.

Misinformation, however, is rife. Governments are learning very quickly how to manipulate social media channels and those channels are not accepting their responsibility as media owners.

Scary how quickly a lie can spread as truth online these days.

I went to Auschwitz 2 years ago as I am fascinated with WWII. The most sombre place I have been, I literally struggled to sleep after visiting as so much was going round in my head.

And as others have said, there were idiots taking selfies in the barracks when we went, could not believe what I was seeing.

Plan to do Berlin next and see what they have to offer WWII history wise.

Never really found WWII that interesting, other than the German invasion of Russia.

Always been more fascinated by the First World War, though probably because my grandfather fought in it.

I wouldn’t be able to hold my tongue if I were there and saw people taking selfies.

The problem is that losing your temper with these people could also be seen as disrespectful, particularly in areas where silence is expected.

It's just a sad state of society.

I didn't take a single photo. I don't understand why anyone does at places like that.

Me and my wife have been struggling to have a child for years. We have been through multiple fertility treatments (currently saving to have another go at egg donation), have looked into surrogacy and adoption. My wife is an emotional wreck about it regularly and gets upset whenever someone we know announces they are pregnant etc.

Anyone who mock someone who has fertility issues is an absolute .

There is nothing weird about sharing personal business. If more men shared personal business which can cause depression and openly talked about it, maybe male suicide would be lower.

If me talking about issues I have makes someone else in a similar situation realise that they are not the only ones and makes them feel better then it is worth it.

Attitudes such as yours, which make discussing these things taboo and allow you to mock people you see as 'fair game' for discussing topics that may lead to mental health issues; are likely to contribute to growing male suicide. Congratulations.

Sorry to hear that mate.

I know it's easy for me to say, but keep the faith if you can.

I have several friends who struggled but it happened for them eventually. One in particular, who had all but given up hope and then it happened.

Just seeing your latest post - you're right to talk about it and sometimes an anonymous forum is the easiest place to do it. Will be keeping fingers crossed for you.

Thanks.

Anyway, this is a weird topic to have on an Auschwitz thread, so probably best to move on.

Just needed to call Stretty out for the he is.
