Can't wait for the reply from the vspokesperson of his generation...professor snowflake
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Already starting to see a breakdown in society, fights over loo roll at the supermarkets etc.

This will only get worse. Unless people take a deep breath (no pun intended) and start to act like facking adults, then this will be a dark year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep the loo roll scraps are deadly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh fack me TOOR.

You're facking clueless if you can't see that this sort of behaviour is the start of a breakdown of society.

But austerity, poverty, crime, etc means nothing to you, that's fine

And I'm the selfish one...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course I can see it. I've been calling it out all week. It's ridiculous. I'm not however saying that it's worse than half a million people dying.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But unless we get a facking grip, then this is just compounding the issue, causing hundreds of thousands more premature deaths, and absolute misery for millions of people.

You need to see the bigger picture here TOOR.

The 2000s financial crisis will seem like a cakewalk compared to what we're about to go through unless people get a hold of themselves.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fred, I am not disputing any of this, I don't disagree, only that it's not worse than half a million people dying, like you said.

But I could easily see another half a million people dying as a result of our hysteria and panic.

I also don't expect half a million people to die as a result of this (especially since they are close to a vaccine).

We had the Asian flu pandemic in 1957 and Hong Kong flu in 1968. The latter had a high infection rate but a relatively low mortality rate and looking at the numbers it would seem that Covid 19 is very similar. Biggest difference between 1968 and now is social media and the negative media in general. Everything is being blown out of proportion with pictures of empty shelves and stories of people fighting over bog rolls. I worry for the old and infirm but the rest of us need to get a grip. Help those that cannot help themselves first and foremost.

But, from that article:

“Like most vaccinologists, I don’t think this vaccine will be ready before 18 months,” says Annelies Wilder-Smith, professor of emerging infectious diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. That’s already extremely fast, and it assumes there will be no hitches.

In the meantime, there is another potential problem. As soon as a vaccine is approved, it’s going to be needed in vast quantities – and many of the organisations in the Covid-19 vaccine race simply don’t have the necessary production capacity.

---------------

Any vaccine is not going to be ready to prevent a wave next winter, let alone do anything for this one.

100% agree. It’s nowhere near as the Armageddon it’s being made out to be. The media have made it worse and social media is a catalyst in promoting mass panic

Had a quick look at the annual Flu report and it looks like 26,000 people died of Flu in the UK in 2017-18 (the last year fully reported).

i know this is early days but the virus has a long way to go to reach those figures

But that isn't the point. It isn't about the numbers that will die in that time. It's about how easily this is passed on and the strain the NHS will come under to the point that hospitals are already being told they may have to make decisions as to who will live and who will die. At no point has any kind of flu had that impact.

Isn't there a winter NHS crisis every year because of the flu? Mind you there's an NHS crisis for every season.

Plus this is around 20 times deadlier than flu and is spreading like wildfire - and with no inbuilt immunity, anyone can get it.

20x deadlier based on what. Most experts expect the actual death rate to be less than 1%...

Looking at the numbers some years are pretty rough whilst others are relatively low numbers of Flu deaths. Must depend on the strains that are prevelant that year.

Couldn’t even begin to. Doctors largely are compassionate beings. Imagine having to be the one to tell patients and their family that there is nothing you can do as others need your help.

The psychological trauma will be absolutely immense with that.
