These pandemics come along once a century.
Unfortunately, extensive and cheap global travel massively facilitates their spread.

We've already agreed that SARS was less serious than COVID. That wasn't necessarily understood in the initial phase and it proved easier to manage.

It's beyond doubt that both originated in China. It's not too far fetched to suggest that we will see something beyond COVID emanate from there within the next twenty years.

Sorry but we can't take that chance.

The rest of the world needs to cut China off completely. They are big enough to survive on their own. No travel in or out is what we needed.

Scream nonsense and racism if you wish but by the end of this, millions will agree.

Spot on.

We were daft letting people travel from China way back.

And Italy and Spain flights in and out of UK and Ireland.

Now, we still see Brits and Irish gather this weekend in crowds.

So many stupid decisions and actions by govt and the public.

New Magnum.

Dave is an angry msn who shouts at those with a differing opinion from him, and called the racism card when I dared mention China in regard to the virus, bird flu, Sars and Chinese govt treatment of people after covering covid up.

I’d worry a little more about what your own government is doing if I were you.

Oh, I have not let the govt off in my posts and they acted too late.

Cummings wanted London lockdown last week btw.

This is not about just blaming China or Tories as we all
Messed up and still are being greedy and silly.

Massive mistake.

So stupid.

Magnum, a fantasy has no basis in reality. Your suggestion that China will be cut off and people stopped from going in and out of the country fits that criteria.

Dave, you may be right. But I was talking more in the future - not this current presidential race - and how the fall out of this pandemic may shape opinion and policy in a slightly different direction regarding healthcare and welfare. I won’t hold my breath, of course, but it’s possible.

I met a client yesterday who’s just returned from a year out in Honolulu. She told me a friend of her colleague had testicular cancer over there in America, and ran up a $500,000 bill once he recovered. He’s now had to file for bankruptcy and has got debt collectors chasing him every day. The health care system in that country is beyond fecked, I’d have let the cancer kill me if I knew it’d cost me that much. In humane doesn’t begin to describe it.

It is shocking when you see those figures - I would say that the healthcare in the US is far superior to what you get in the UK - you really do get what you pay for

If you have health insurance it’s not actually hugely a bad system - but the thing falls down for people who don’t have it and for those without it my heart goes out to them. The ones who get wheeled out the back door when hospitals find out they don’t have insurance is a scandalous situation.

I used to sell private medical insurance and I know very well just how good it can be when you do have that kind of cover. A whole new world from what the NHS offers but I wouldn’t for one second want the NHS to go away - it may not be as good as private or the US cover/care but for a large population it’s arguably the best way to do things (obviously that last line there was never my sales pitch 😂)

Morning Dave. Hope you’re good down under mate.

What strange times we live in. Brings out the best and the worst in people. Family as good as can be mate under the circumstances. Hope yours are too
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Does indeed, Gingertesticles (sorry, for old times sake).

Oz is about to spike too. The govt here has been negligently slow just as most countries have been. It's already hit my back pocket with work, but extended family, the missus and I are fine.

Take care of yourself and the fam. I don't recall specifics, but recall you've got quite a few employees. I hope you and them are spared as much as possible. Dealing with that is a big stressor that most of us mere mortals don't have to deal with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In the hundreds mate.

Took the decision a week ago to instruct (not ask) people to work from home if it was possible and we would put all the necessary IT in for them. That went well and is working. Makes for future changes. No meetings whatsoever with anyone outside the work and even internally by Microsoft Team, Skype or whatever. We have a lot of operatives on site and they are very strict on that side. All travel and accommodation cancelled.

I go in every day as I don’t think it’s right that some are office bound while I stay at home. Staff all yards apart. It’s not ideal but we function and maintain demand. All staff been told anything like a sniffle in their immediate family and they call in and stay at home regardless of how important they think they are. In the last week I’ve sent home a fellow board member and today my CFO. No complaints from them to be fair.

We just do what we can but I think the decision on working will be taken by government very soon. I won’t let anyone go or change conditions unless the very company is at risk and I won’t take proactive measures to do so even if it looks bad. I’ll see this through until it’s out of my hands.

Robb,

Very sensible to adjust your plans. Oz has the potential to be spared some of the worst case scenarios due to the NHS here and other pop dynamics factors, but would still be a mess to come back to to start a new chapter.

If you're in Valencia still, go pinch the Holy Grail and have a swig of some nice Rioja from it for me. See if Monty P. were on the right track

Haha, I’m just outside London now. Saw all those people on Bondi beach the other day. Idiots. Kevin Bacon of all people today came up with the best idea/concept - everyone should just assume they have it and consider themselves dangerous to everyone else.

I see Russell Brand is stuck in rural NSW 😂 Can think of worse places to be in the apocalypse tbh.

Rob, yeah I agree with that. Basic healthcare should be a human right not a privilege.

Dave, yeah I get that. I do think there will be a shift in public opinion but whether it’s enough to have any significant change I’m not certain of.

If a pandemic such as this doesn’t, however, something is truly broken in America.

Watching a video now of this American woman who bought every single item of toilet paper/hand towels etc from a store. Literally dozens of huge boxes being loaded onto a truck.

If there is a hell I’d imagine people in these troubled days are using the devils Expedia to book themselves in at a later date

I can’t help but think that if you do get this and there is an immunity to it that as the days pass, people will start opening their businesses and will open just to people who’ve had it and there may be a two tier system where it’s a ‘have’ and ‘have not’ situation.

The people stuck at home who haven’t had it will possibly go into deep depression seeing the lucky ones (lucky in the loosest sense) being able to go out again.

Wonder what proof there would be that you’ve had it.
