The only revenue stream the big clubs are missing out on at the moment is matchday income.

With the TV companies unlikely to pay any money upfront for next season plus sponsors probably wanting to revise their deals, financial reality willa really kick in after June 30th.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
'For next season'.
I'm pretty sure if your going to end this season due to the threat of a virus that will more than likely still be around till the end of the calendar year, at the least, then there ain't going to be a next season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A rather pessimistic view.

I sincerely hope there's a next season, even if it starts in 2021 like some experts are predicting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pessimistic is giving up on this season even though the consequences are grave.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They're not grave in the grander scheme of things unless you're not concerned about the welfare of the players, their families, the fans and the fact the vast majority of people are looking forward more to the development of a vaccine rather than looking out for the football results.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well of that's your criteria regards the interests of football, in regard to vaccines and at the least actual treatments for this virus, you can kiss goodbye to the 2020/2021 season.

But what is the point of saying this on a football forum? Everyone is aware of this and have stated that it should happen only if safe enough.

Spurs alone has over 3,500 employees. There's hundreds of clubs in England so thats thousands of employees who also have families and bills to pay. Don't they matter? Should we not try to preserve their livelihoods?

If we fail then so be it, but we have to try.

What is?
A vaccine?
Would be a miracle if one were available within 12 months.

The 20/21 season unless they use a revised format like only playing 19 games.

Before you get to next season, there is a final payment/instalment yet to be made for this season which will make up merit payments.

Many clubs will not go very far without this payment according to reports and TV companies are not expected to pay it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

fwiw I think the tv companies will show some responsibility and an understanding here

I'd like to think they'll restructure the deal to make it last longer and spread the "loss" over a period of time.

So say the don't pay the last 25% but have the next 2 years deal, they may offer to spread that "loss" if the EPL sign up for 4 years and accept no increase for that time and avoid the bidding war.

Maybe
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, maybe. Highly unlikely IMO but can't rule it out. Also, SKY and BT would ask for an arm and a leg in return.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to think it's in their interest as a damaged league set up with some clubs going to the wall would make for less of a viewing spectacle.

It's just like managing a decent debtor in reality. You know they are good for it; it's just a matter of when.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really as debtors don't bid for the right to be indebted.

Sky and BT know that competition is coming from the likes of Amazon, Facebook etc who have the finances to blow them away. The current situation is a godsend for them as they can get the PL to commit to future "favours".
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But that's exactly my point

They have the deal and can refuse to pay so it makes sense for them to drive a deal that spreads the cost of the hit to the clubs while they gain a better deal

Both sides get something

Agreed but what will the PL be giving up in exchange. Probably billions of pounds in future rights.

The likes of Amazon and Facebook will blow their bids outta the water. They have no chance unless they can get the PL to commit to them in future.

If I was Sky or BT, I know what I would be demanding.

I don't think they'd sign up to that. It would have to be palatable. It might be the cost of half a season say or maybe even a whole season, who knows?

Better to renegotiate the deal and have a steady income than have nothing for maybe that year

If to comes to that.

For now the best option is to try to finish the season and remain free from obligations.

Does this mean we'd get enormous highs whilst watching games followed by a massive feeling of guilt and shame at the final whistle?

The media. The PL also believed it was simply a matter of time before they entered the fray. It didn't materialise and the bids were lower than anticipated.

Amazon secured a 'cheap' deal for some games, testing the water, but the PL was hoping FB/Amazon/Netflix would look to bid for multiple packages.

Having dipped their toe into the water, it will remain to be seen if Amazon are happy with their current deal going forward or whether they see it worthwhile in going for the whole lot at the next bidding process.

The only thing you can be sure of is that if they do want the whole package, there's not really anyone out there that could stop them. Amazon are comfortably rich enough will take what they want if they want it badly enough.

I agree. Bezos is a megalomaniac though and his ego won't let him just high ball the competition. He likes to use amazon's strength as leverage.

I suspect they will toy with sky and bt for a while so they are less inclined to try and compete, which may allow amazon to get some packages they see as value.
Much like they did with the 100 million package but I think it will slowly snowball.

If people think levy is shrewd Bezos wrote the manual 😅

The problem for PL teams is one that people hate to admit. It's all about the money. Call it karma call it what you will, the fact is nearly all PL teams that don't have billionaire sugar daddies will have their finances destroyed.

For years the PL TV money has allowed our league to sign and pay for the best players. Teams like Bournemouth, 80%+ of their revenue is from TV money.
No behind closed doors games would be catastrophic.

Then look at Spurs, United etc with their huge stadiums and debt/loans to service. That's monstrous amounts of money they will lose from no fans, probably until 2021 with the current government guidelines.
Imagine them also having no TV money? People are talking like footballers cannot be safely quarantined. They have to be for the survival of football as we know it.
Clubs aren't going to risk a 100 million pound asset dying from covid without massive safety precautions.
They can address survival and safety equally without sacrificing either. It just takes serious planning which is what they are doing.

All teams will be effected. If anything the bigger teams will lose more money from the turnstiles but the day the PL became all about record TV deals we kinda made a deal with the devil.

Even if Bournemouth played behind closed doors and got relegated (after playing their remaining games), they would be in a better situation arguably than if the season was canceled with no more TV money. Oh but they would get next seasons tv money you say! But them games would be behind closed doors and no different to what they are proposing now.

No fans in stadiums won't change scrapping this season. Covid won't just go away so we can start next season in September. That's the reason they haven't just voided the season already.

France, Belgium, holland etc their clubs just don't have the dependence on TV money. If they did they would also be looking at the same things the PL are, in my view.
