R9 vs CR7

Both are class. They did things at their time not many had done. To be fair to CR9, he had his nations expectations on him at the age of 18 or 19 when he was at that world cup and had a seizure or something in the changing rooms. I'm a Liverpool, so I think CR9 resonates with me more for obvious reasons.

However, both are class, I appreciate both their achievements and easily two of the best footballers of time! πŸ‘

Agree with pretty much everything, personally I believe R9 was more talented but still wouldn't have had as remarkable a career as CR7 as CR7 is a freak when it comes to his drive and desire.

Could argue R9's peak was perhaps higher, but for much much less time.

The problem that CR7 faces is that due to his (and Messi's) inhuman consistency, people have been desensitised to their brilliance to an extent.

R9 for me is just a more talented and better player

CR7 deserves respect for better fitness and life choices but R9 was phenomenal and I can name many top footballers who would name him as their best.

I respect your opinion but I don’t remember R9 hitting 60 odd goals in a season like CR7 at his peak.

I know goals don’t always tell the full story but R9 was a CF and CR7 a left sided wing forward.

I did think about this when I typed the comment, but I guess I meant on a match to match basis.

Both on their day were pretty unplayable, but R9 was just that little bit more ridiculous IMO

Best ever in terms of talent arguably but surely not a better player than guys who are at a ridiculous standard year after year after year.

I don't think you can justify saying that R9 was better.

I don’t think it’s much of a debate anymore. And hasn’t been for a long time.

CR7 never had the injury issues that R9 had. They ruined his career but he still managed to score plenty of goals and score some of the best goals you’ll ever see. At 18 he scored 47 goals in 49 games for Barca. Then injuries ruined what was to come. But at his peak he was playing at a higher level than CR7

Just an opinion and one shared my some ex footballers too.

In terms of career, consistency, achievements, Christiano doesn't have many equals. Along with Messi he's set standards the likes we'll probably never see again. Plus on the training side, a determination to be the best and pure drive and ambition, CR7 has no equal.

Any young player only need look at him to see what can be achieved with hard work. In incredible player.

R9 is my favourite player ever. Still had a glorious career despite injuries. Truely mindblowing skill. A party boy swagger that makes him a great character too which I love even more. For me he's way more entertaining to watch than either CR7 or Messi.

I know whose highlights I've seen more of and it's not even close. That'll always place him above CR7 for me😎

If I had a footballer playing on a side who was playing to save my life and I had to choose either at their peak it would have to be R9

No, he can’t. It’s still fashionable amongst some to claim the Brazilian as the “real Ronaldo” but it’s doesn’t stack up by any valid metric anymore.

It's not really fair on Cristiano or Messi to compared them in terms of greatness to Brazilian Ronaldo. They've objectively surpassed him. In terms of talent maybe you can talk, but that's always a weird debate to have. Does it matter?

Does any debate matter?

There’s the career aspect and CR7 wins every time

But as football is also a game of talent there’s always a debate to be had as to which player has more talent and many would say R9 had more talent than CR7.

But the fact is he had those injuries and was never quite the same. I still highly doubt he’d have hit CR7’s numbers on a consistent basis.

What CR7 has done in the CL knockouts is scandalous.

The argument about what Ronaldo could have been and what he was isn’t a good argument. But even still, CR7’s goal scoring record blows him away when the two were at their respective peaks. Even a ‘past it’ Cristiano scores goals at a higher rate than Ronaldo ever did. And CR7 at his best was more than just goals, whereas R9 didn’t have the same impact outside of scoring.

The peak argument is more valid, but in terms of their careers there aren’t many that give R9 the edge. It’s not even close, to be honest, for obvious reasons.

posted on 4/5/20

Let’s put it this way - if you could merge the work ethic and ability to not get injuries with R9’s talent we would have the greatest player ever and one that would surpass anything we’ve ever seen. I don’t even know how that can be debated

Tbf I don’t think anyone is saying R9 had a better career. It’s obvious R7 did.

But as you say, peak is the real debate and it’s one that id imagine many would argue over and it’s not so clear cut

Brazilian Ronaldo had more natural ability but Portuguese Ronaldo made use of his ability better. Of course injuries played their part in that. Overall Portuguese Ronaldo has been the better player, due to the injuries.

One thing against CR7 is that at the peak of his career, playing for one of the best clubs in world football, he was hampered by ultra defensive and boring football under Mourinho.

His numbers could have been even more impressive if he wasn't managed by the Portuguese Pulis in that time.

That literally didn’t happen

Of course CR7 has had a far better career, scored more goals and is a 'better' player.

But I'm not a manager, nor a statistician, just a fan. And as a fan I like watching magic happen.
Hence George, Barnes, Berbatov and players of that ilk are my heroes.
So you can tell who I like to watch most.

But I am pleased we had CR7 for a few years.

Did he not have best scoring season under Mourinho in a side that scored over 100 league goals? Mourinho was not defensive at Real other than games vs Barca.
