One thing against CR7 is that at the peak of his career, playing for one of the best clubs in world football, he was hampered by ultra defensive and boring football under Mourinho.

His numbers could have been even more impressive if he wasn't managed by the Portuguese Pulis in that time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did he not have best scoring season under Mourinho in a side that scored over 100 league goals? Mourinho was not defensive at Real other than games vs Barca.

I think he was just wumming Wahl

CR7 and Messi a mile ahead of R9, Maradona, Best and whoever you want to name. Pele! Watch his highlight reel...nothing in there that CR7 doesn’t do week in week out.

Portugese Pulis! 😂

I think they're both great, which ones better? I think that's for the eye of the beholder. Clearly CR7 stats wise is heads and shoulders, but for obscene brilliance, CR9 was one hell of a player. Shame about his injuries but CR7 has done better overall.

CR7 surpassed his peak as well. Him and Messi have normalised the idea of scoring more goals than games because they done it so often. Not just in the league either, what they’ve done in the CL is extraordinary- R9 was never close to reaching those levels in the competition.

It looked easier for R9, more finesse, sublime and mercurial but ultimately R7 has been the better player and had the better career for reasons mentioned here.

Ronaldo’s best goal scoring season was Ancelotti’s second season.

Messi is the most naturally gifted player ever imo. 91 goals in a calendar will never be matched in the modern era.

I think 10-20 years from now, what CR7 and Messi will have achieved will be placed in its proper context and will actually look even better than it does now. Because I don't think anyone will hit their level again in that period. Not for 10 seasons in a row like they did/are doing and definitely not two players.

They also played in better sides than CR9

Not saying that either Messi and Ronaldo are anything other than phenomenal but CR9 has some valid excuses in his corner. Played in Serie A at a time when defences were much better than the defences in La Liga over the past 10 years. And every time he got going he’d get injured.

He played with Beckham, Raul, Makelele, Roberto Carlos, Salgado, Zidane and Figo at club.

Ronaldinho, Kaka, Cafu, Carlos and Rivaldo at international level.

To say he had inferior team mates is ridiculous.

posted on 4/5/20

They did, but they also made those teams as good as they were. Look at Real without Ronaldo and how ordinary Barca look without Messi. I do agree a lot hindered Ronaldo, but it is what it is. He just didn’t reach the level these two have done.

And at international level he smashed it.

At club level he did have stars playing in his side but they were known as the Galacticos and they underachieved for many reasons.

Put CR9 in that Barca 09 side and I’m certain they still win all the trophies - same with the Real 16-18 side

I don’t think Peps Barca or the 3 in a row Real Madrid would have been ordinary it’s just those two make any team infinitely better.

Thats true, Robb. R9 played with some absolute donkeys at Real Madrid and international level.

Workmanlike players like Figo, Zidane, Beckham, Raul, Carlos, Ramos, Robinho, Guti, Owen, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafu, Kaka...

Frankly, it’s a miracle he ever got double figures in a season.

Wow, naming Owen with that! Should be ashamed of yourself. Loved Gutti by the way, he was so good.

I don’t think they’d have been ordinary, Barca would be the last few years, however, they’d be nowhere near as good. Even if you put R9 in those sides. You can’t ignore the reliability, durability and consistency of these two players and how it impacts the teams they play in.

If R9 had a different body and different mind it’d be a different discussion, but he didn’t and why his legend will always be based on a small sample size.

Similar thing with Ronaldinho, who is arguably the most talented of the lot. The Brazilian duo are two of my favourite players ever, because of how fun they were to watch. The unexpected adds to the legend. Ronaldo and Messi don’t really provide the unexpected as they’ve normalised it. So people become desensitised to just how ridiculous they are.

Who’s saying he played with rubbish people at international level? No one and he succeeded there very much so

And yes, he did play with very good players at club level but it’s a well known fact that the Real Galactico sides were more a bunch of good players than a great team. It was a common complaint at the time. It didn’t gel like the Real side of the past few years. Had R9 played in that one I’m sure he would have won more trophies than he did

Yep, that one. Which also had an ageing midfield that needs replacing.
