I'm not playing a game? I found Busby's view that the postcode you live will have a greater effect on your life than the colour of your skin to be nonense. Why would I 'carry on quoting' that fact, I mentioned it once in response to Busby who never bothered to use anything to back his point.
Clearly being poor and coming from deprived areas will drastically effect your chances in life, both myself and my partner have come from tough backgrounds but have luckily been able to do ok financially in life while most of the people we grew up with didn't. But being black no matter what your background financially will always create problems for you in life.

What studies? You do realise race and household income are related? I read recently (think it might have been mentioned by Akala) that 50% of the poorest people in the UK are black, yet black people only represent 3.3% of the population, clearly race is a huge issue in this country and for people to think it isn't just shows how many people don't understand the problem.
You then went on to say this. You’re not even aware of the research and work that has gone into this topic, despite that you swear at Busby and say that it’s nonsense.
You then use the 50% & 3% and that therefore there is a huge race problem.
It doesn’t stack up when you actually look at data in kore depth than you’re quoting there.
What Busby said is absolutely right. Other factors play a much bigger part in income disparity than racism does.

No, I simply used that stat to show that race and income are related so you can’t easily dismiss race as not as ‘important’. It’s hugely important but because BAME take up a small percentage of the population it isn’t going to represent a large issue in terms of numbers.

1) A huge and widening disparity in income, wealth, education and opportunity. This gap opened up as a result of Thatcher's restructuring of the economy and fiscal system, constraining trade union rights, etc., and has continued to widen under successive governments who have continued with privatisations. (Even under Blair/Brown income inequality continued to grow, while other types of inequality reduced.) This erodes the fabric of society and if we care about it, we should all really consider not voting Tory.
2) Systemic racism. This is part of the reason why people in certain ethnic minorities are heavily overrepresented among the people who suffer most from point 1. There have been lots of studies using identical CVs / applications with Anglo-Saxon names vs names that imply BAME origin that show empirically that on average you're more likely to be successful if you're white.
Some of these things are chicken-and-egg. For example, if this country were better at social mobility in general, the stigma of coming from a poor background would be weaker, and 'looking' like you come from a poor background would be less of a barrier.
But for me the key thing is: both of these things are terrible, and there's no conflict in wanting to address them both. In fact, historically in the UK the political right has been less interested both in economic equality and racial equality. This is why Tory politicians talking about the plight of the white working class is disingenuous. Austerity, like Thatcher's deindustrialisation before it, has battered the white working class along with the black and Asian working class. This is why Johnson and Cummings are delighted to have a culture war over BLM. Blame immigrants, encourage people to think that *they* want special treatment, and a sizeable number of people will vote for you to continue shafting them.

I’m not saying race isn’t important, I’m saying it’s probably one of around ten important factors that lead to disparity. I appreciate that you did say they are related but the way you framed it and then said it’s a huge problem indicates that you think it’s the main factor when it isn’t.
Fair enough on Busby if you have personal feelings towards him but I think he is right that the factors he listed add up to be more significant than racism alone.

Both sides are guilty of being delighted in having a culture war. If there is more division and the same ideas that black people are not progressing, that there is no progress helps the left’s agenda because if there is no division and there is no progress and it’s all doom & gloom for black people, then they can see that the system isn’t working, vote us in. If there is unity and progress is acknowledged then they cannot say that there is a systemic problem.
It’s similar to what we were discussing before, they’re both as bad as each other, they just come at it from another perspective and they have one common goal; to get & stay in power.

I’m not saying race isn’t important, I’m saying it’s probably one of around ten important factors that lead to disparity.

I'd be interested in hearing about the nine other factors that are equally or more important that race in explaining why black people disproportionately belong to the lowest income groups.
I guess one of them would be that many of these families arrived in the country a couple of generations ago with limited assets, and haven't had time to work themselves up the social ladder. One thing to bear in mind here is that many of those first generation immigrants in the 50s-70s experienced vicious racism that cemented their place at the bottom of society. There were trade unions that resisted allowing black workers to join their workforce in addition to employers who were reluctant to give them a chance. There were educated, middle class Caribbean families who were only offered manual work.
Our economy is a reflection of the sum of our activity, including our prejudices. Explaining the world we live in based on an economic / class snapshot should not be used to play down the impact of racism.

I'm not playing a game? I found Busby's view that the postcode you live will have a greater effect on your life than the colour of your skin to be nonense. Why would I 'carry on quoting' that fact, I mentioned it once in response to Busby who never bothered to use anything to back his point.
Clearly being poor and coming from deprived areas will drastically effect your chances in life, both myself and my partner have come from tough backgrounds but have luckily been able to do ok financially in life while most of the people we grew up with didn't. But being black no matter what your background financially will always create problems for you in life.

What studies? You do realise race and household income are related? I read recently (think it might have been mentioned by Akala) that 50% of the poorest people in the UK are black, yet black people only represent 3.3% of the population, clearly race is a huge issue in this country and for people to think it isn't just shows how many people don't understand the problem.
You then went on to say this. You’re not even aware of the research and work that has gone into this topic, despite that you swear at Busby and say that it’s nonsense.
You then use the 50% & 3% and that therefore there is a huge race problem.
It doesn’t stack up when you actually look at data in kore depth than you’re quoting there.
What Busby said is absolutely right. Other factors play a much bigger part in income disparity than racism does.
Does that mean that racism doesn’t exist or that life isn’t even ‘til this day harder for a black person? No of. Of use it doesn’t mean that.

No, I simply used that stat to show that race and income are related so you can’t easily dismiss race as not as ‘important’. It’s hugely important but because BAME take up a small percentage of the population it isn’t going to represent a large issue in terms of numbers.

There are two issues:
1) A huge and widening disparity in income, wealth, education and opportunity. This gap opened up as a result of Thatcher's restructuring of the economy and fiscal system, constraining trade union rights, etc., and has continued to widen under successive governments who have continued with privatisations. (Even under Blair/Brown income inequality continued to grow, while other types of inequality reduced.) This erodes the fabric of society and if we care about it, we should all really consider not voting Tory.
2) Systemic racism. This is part of the reason why people in certain ethnic minorities are heavily overrepresented among the people who suffer most from point 1. There have been lots of studies using identical CVs / applications with Anglo-Saxon names vs names that imply BAME origin that show empirically that on average you're more likely to be successful if you're white.
Some of these things are chicken-and-egg. For example, if this country were better at social mobility in general, the stigma of coming from a poor background would be weaker, and 'looking' like you come from a poor background would be less of a barrier.
But for me the key thing is: both of these things are terrible, and there's no conflict in wanting to address them both. In fact, historically in the UK the political right has been less interested both in economic equality and racial equality. This is why Tory politicians talking about the plight of the white working class is disingenuous. Austerity, like Thatcher's deindustrialisation before it, has battered the white working class along with the black and Asian working class. This is why Johnson and Cummings are delighted to have a culture war over BLM. Blame immigrants, encourage people to think that *they* want special treatment, and a sizeable number of people will vote for you to continue shafting them.

2) Systemic racism. This is part of the reason why people in certain ethnic minorities are heavily overrepresented among the people who suffer most from point 1. There have been lots of studies using identical CVs / applications with Anglo-Saxon names vs names that imply BAME origin that show empirically that on average you're more likely to be successful if you're white.
Some of these things are chicken-and-egg. For example, if this country were better at social mobility in general, the stigma of coming from a poor background would be weaker, and 'looking' like you come from a poor background would be less of a barrier.
But for me the key thing is: both of these things are terrible, and there's no conflict in wanting to address them both. In fact, historically in the UK the political right has been less interested both in economic equality and racial equality. This is why Tory politicians talking about the plight of the white working class is disingenuous. Austerity, like Thatcher's deindustrialisation before it, has battered the white working class along with the black and Asian working class. This is why Johnson and Cummings are delighted to have a culture war over BLM. Blame immigrants, encourage people to think that *they* want special treatment, and a sizeable number of people will vote for you to continue shafting them.

Both sides are guilty of being delighted in having a culture war. If there is more division and the same ideas that black people are not progressing, that there is no progress helps the left’s agenda because if there is no division and there is no progress and it’s all doom & gloom for black people, then they can see that the system isn’t working, vote us in. If there is unity and progress is acknowledged then they cannot say that there is a systemic problem.
It’s similar to what we were discussing before, they’re both as bad as each other, they just come at it from another perspective and they have one common goal; to get & stay in power.

Fair enough, I wasn't trying to suggest racism is the biggest factor, it was probably the wording of Busby that claimed a post code as more imporant that annoyed me, as he seems to do often with his wording.

I’m not saying race isn’t important, I’m saying it’s probably one of around ten important factors that lead to disparity.

I'd be interested in hearing about the nine other factors that are equally or more important that race in explaining why black people disproportionately belong to the lowest income groups.
I guess one of them would be that many of these families arrived in the country a couple of generations ago with limited assets, and haven't had time to work themselves up the social ladder. One thing to bear in mind here is that many of those first generation immigrants in the 50s-70s experienced vicious racism that cemented their place at the bottom of society. There were trade unions that resisted allowing black workers to join their workforce in addition to employers who were reluctant to give them a chance. There were educated, middle class Caribbean families who were only offered manual work.
Our economy is a reflection of the sum of our activity, including our prejudices. Explaining the world we live in based on an economic / class snapshot should not be used to play down the impact of racism.
