I’m not saying race isn’t important, I’m saying it’s probably one of around ten important factors that lead to disparity.
-------------------------------------------------------------
I'd be interested in hearing about the nine other factors that are equally or more important that race in explaining why black people disproportionately belong to the lowest income groups.
I guess one of them would be that many of these families arrived in the country a couple of generations ago with limited assets, and haven't had time to work themselves up the social ladder. One thing to bear in mind here is that many of those first generation immigrants in the 50s-70s experienced vicious racism that cemented their place at the bottom of society. There were trade unions that resisted allowing black workers to join their workforce in addition to employers who were reluctant to give them a chance. There were educated, middle class Caribbean families who were only offered manual work.
Our economy is a reflection of the sum of our activity, including our prejudices. Explaining the world we live in based on an economic / class snapshot should not be used to play down the impact of racism.

Good post.
Depressing, but can't argue with much, except, we have got better now.
Both sides are guilty of being delighted in having a culture war.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, I really don't see that. The mainstream Left is trying hard to keep out of this. It gets battered every time there's a culture war of this sort, because it needs the votes of the whole working class. You'll have noticed the leadership of the Labour party has been very quiet about statues, etc. Similarly, Biden in the States is talking about bringing people together - no incendiary rhetoric.
On the streets, BLM people are angry. But apart from a small fringe of trouble makers, they are there not because they want a culture war. They're there because they want to stop racism, which is a war (for want of a better word) that's being waged against them. It's people who want equality vs people who want supremacy. The only people who really benefit from this are the people who benefit from dividing the working class, which is to say the 1%.

RR - I’m not evading you’re request but it’s really long and if I make a short version, people will just pick up on something that is said without the due depth and clarity.
All I will say is, as I have before many times on here, that fighting against racism is a good thing, of course it is. And that I’m not stating that there are others factors purely to undermine the significance of racism in these disparities. What I am doing is disagreeing with those who say/imply that race is the biggest factor or the only factor which some people. I thought that’s what 1982 was doing but he wasn’t and we cleared that up but a lot of people out there genuinely think that racism is the sole or main cause of disparity and I’m saying that isn’t the case.
Like the discussion about acknowledging progress, I think it is important for people to be aware of these other factors as they also need addressing in order to close this gap in income inequality.
Gender is a big factor - black women outperform white women in similar circumstances, whilst black men on average still don’t. Is that sexism against men? Sexism against black men? Can it be purely down down to racism if black women outperform white women?
Again, I’m not here to ridicule the fight against racism, I’m just trying to balance out the notion that a lot of people have that is that racism is the biggest factor.

Why?
Half BLM marchers and antifa are white.
A race war would be silly.
UK black population is 4 % remember, and 13 % in America.
If it spreads to Europe too, future migration from black and brown poor nations is over into the "whitewest"
London is quite different from the rest if the UK too.
