It has gained so much attention because of the up-coming US election, with the Democrat media using it as a tool to undermine Trumps position.
I wonder how many of the millionaire players realise what they are bending the knee to.

Racism is mainstream today too.
And comfortable with somebody ELSE’S marriage?
I didn't realise random racists got an opinion on it. Same as gay marriage. Mind your own....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. And in 1980 the majority of British people didn't want their kids marrying someone of a different colour, whereas today the VAST majority have no problem with the idea. We shouldn't be asking for medals for this, but I struggle to see it as something other than progress.
We have serious problems with resurgent racism, but that's an example of a reflection of racism that was mainstream in the past that has become very marginal today.
I think there’s an alarming rise in both far right and far left ideologies making their way into politics which boils down to this extreme polarisation that we all agree is happening these days.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Having lived in Russia and studied 20th century Russia, I'm under no illusions that left-wing extremism is benign. It doesn't make much difference to the person in front of the firing squad whether they're living under a fascist or a Stalinist regime.
Having said that (and I welcome people pointing out my blind spots, because we all have them), I really struggle to see a left-wing equivalent to the threat posed by the authoritarian ethno-nationalists seizing power all over the place and gradually usurping traditional centre-right parties. Wherever they have a sniff of power, they are challenging the independence of the courts (and thereby threatening the rule of law), attacking parts of the media that aren't actively supportive, and indulging in disinformation. There is no equivalent in the mainstream politics, let alone parties in power, on the left in the Western world today. Of course there is student union 'cancel culture', which has overtones of book burning if taken to one extreme - but, as we discussed above, can also involve justified critiques of unconscious pockets of injustice. Either way, none of that is a million miles away from looking like it could threaten the fabric of Western democracy, in the way characters like Orban, Ergodan, the ruling party of Poland and, yes, the lawless Trump administration do.
Or can you show me some clear and present threats on a similar level on the Left within Western democracies?

C 16, Title XI are some examples. They come from a good place but the problem is that the only ways of enforcing the good idea actually has far more negative repercussions.
Things can go too far on the right and things can go too far on the right but we don’t know what the markers are for going too far on the left.
I think it’s imperative that people who are ‘liberal or left-leaning’ to identify the markers of the extreme left and to distinguish themselves who hold those pathological view points. You do not come across as someone who needs that pointing out to them but I think there are a lot of people on the left who are walking into a very extreme change that they’re not seeing coming and then when it gets here, reality will kick in and they will all change their opinions when serious, serious repercussions occur.
I think this will also doom the liberal left project.
The root cause for supporting left is driven by a horror of inequality and the catastrophe that inequality produces, which is completely fair enough and completely reasonable but this concern can go too far.
For example for me, the line should be drawn at equality of outcome. It’s very hard to draw the line with the left because it is so much more open, if you think of extreme right (skin heads n4zi types etc) it’s very easy to point that out and say as a reasonable person ‘hey that’s disgusting I don’t agree with that’ but things on the left such as C 16 for example or maybe the recent examples we had with older tv shows & movies is that on an individual basis they can appear quite harmless and only doing good but the opposite ends up being the case (1984 style).
Another example is putting in place legislative change to combat the gender pay gap. There are lots of calls for governments to implement stricter versions of the equality act 2010 for example and that is with the intention of realising equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity. The reason for the gender pay gap is not due to sexism, sexism plays its part of course, but much like the inequality discussions on race, there are a multitude of factors that lead to the gender pay gap.
I always enjoy having these discussions with you as you have a totally different opinion to me in many respects but that doesn’t stop us from having an adult conversation.

Walking around a garden not thinking about race doesn’t mean that there isn’t a problem with race. These things have been happening for many years and most people don’t think about it until something big happens. And hopefully after each time it happens and these protests happen, fewer people forget how bad others have it.
As for going back 40 years - maybe a bit extreme but with things like the Brexit vote, the growing influence of people like Tommy Robinson and a rise in racist t incidents in football matches in recent years society does have to hold firm to stop things from regressing to a time most would want to forget.
wtf does brexit have to do with race?
Ultimately I do assign blame for a lot of this and isn’t people like me and it isn’t people like you RR and I would even put the extremists on both sides behind this when assigning blame for this current melting pot of frustration & confusion.
I blame the media, I think they’re being an absolute disgrace with all of this. We all know that’s what the media is like but it’s almost that we just accept that these days. They are fuelling so much division across the world whether that be race, nationality, gender - anything. Why? Because sensationalism sells and fair reasonable assessments don’t. Disgusting

yeah, they dont own slaves.
Sat Nav, I'm enjoying the open and respectful discussion too.
Thanks for your answer. I guess my main reflection on what you said is that I'm less worried about the fringe extremists and more worried about the stability of our political system as a whole. I believe that violent racists on our street are a cancer to be stopped but they'll always been a tiny fringe. What concerns me much more is a Conservative government flirting in some ways with that fringe, exaggerating the threat to statues, encouraging a culture war to pump up the blood pressure of their supporters. More than that, I'm worried about thinly veiled threats to the BBC and Channel 4 that their status could be reduced if they aren't subservient (when already broadcasters are scared of pointing out demonstrable lies by members of the government because they are supposed to be 'balanced' ). I'm more scared of the government and its cheerleaders in the press calling apolitical judges 'enemies of the people' and questioning the legitimacy of their judgements when they go against them. I'm worried about the lack of transparency at a pivotal moment in our history when we need to scrutinise the government more than ever. I'm worried that the Russia report (which was ready for release before the General Election) still hasn't come out - so we still don't know its supposedly concerning findings on Russian oligarchs' funding of the Conservative party and the Russian state's activities in attempting to sow discord in the UK.
This is a slippery slope. I'm so disappointed that there seem to be very few small-c conservatives around yelling about it, because we could really do with people standing up for our British democratic institutions and exercising a conservative critique of radical change right now. (I guess those figures do still exist, but many of them have been kicked out of the Tory party, which is closer to Farage's UKIP in character now, or have naturally drifted towards more centrist, less authoritarian parties.)
Yeah like we’ve both said we’re in a world of polarisation and as I said earlier on. If there’s a trend of extremism one way or the other then politicians will follow and vice versa.
What irks me as you’re saying as well is that these points, the ones I’m making and the ones you’re making are not getting hardly any discussion at all in the mainstream media, it’s just reductive polarised extreme nonsense because it sells better than what we’re talking about.

Disgusting

Well America hasn’t progressed much in 400 years, you’d think The South actually won the civil war ffs.
And have we progressed much? I don’t see it.
