Top tip - when anyone mentions ‘road tax’ you know they’re ignorant and not worth debating with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone knows that Road Tax is just a euphemism for Vehicle Tax.
Cyclists should be subject to mandatory insurance
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The educated know that it’s a tax on emissions, which is why people on bikes don’t pay it.
And if you didn’t know that then I’m certainly not going to waste my time discussing the insurance ‘idea’ with you.
So you’re saying someone running on the pavement should pay tax? As they’re using it with more force exerted than others. Also they are going somewhere faster - should they pay for designated running/jogging lanes?

Road tax, vehicle tax also irrelevant, since a bicycle in indeed a vehicle. Many have now been converted to dual use as a motor vehicle anyway.
Agree on the insurance naturally. It should be paid in addition to a road tax. Just like cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles.

No, you're just being pedantic there. It's not illegal to run on the pavement. Nor is the pavement the vehicle highway.
Let’s make pedestrians pay a pavement tax.
It’s outrageous that they get to use publicly funded resources to get around yet they don’t pay a penny in contributions.
And sometimes I even have to wait for them to cross the road before I can drive. Absolutely disgusting levels of entitlement.

Oh, hang on... we could be onto something here... and how are the roads paid for?
I don't get the rage against cyclists tbh, some of them will be nobs on purpose but it's not a big deal. It's worse in central but I don't drive there much. There's loads of new unnecessary cycle lanes popping up during lockdown though, two lane roads now becoming one lane and a cycle lane where cyclists would have been fine to just ride on the left lane as it was.
Road tax doesn't go to road improvements it goes to the government, councils are meant to deal with potholes and other things from their own budget (but don't)

Those are all reasons why a cyclist should pay alot less for road tax but since road tax is actually paid, to cover a big chunk of what it cost's to maintain roads (part of which is building and maintaining cycle lanes). Not one of them is a good reason for cyclists to be completely exempt from road tax.
If you don't want to pay tax to use the accelerated highway. Then bloody well walk or use public transport. Wanna go faster than everyone doing that, then pay to do so. Same as everyone else using the road because they want to go faster than walking pace and not get on a bus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is not true. Taxes for roads don't come from your car tax. As far as I'm aware, which would make sense as some vechiles don't pay tax, it's down to your emissions.
Ah yes of course, tax free cars.
I wonder why people don't get into a fit of rage about those.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
On that topic there is a massive shock coming for owners of said cars (electric or hybrid vehicles)
These cars due to the batteries they have actually are quite a weighty creation, they can accelerate fast but are still using the same contact with the road ie the vulcanised rubber tyre.
So why should some cars pay less to use the road when they could be wearing away the surface faster? Makes zero sense.
So while the tax take from cars will reduce (under current policy) if the uptake of electric cars continues, what does the government do?
Also.. and stay with me here WB2, I cycle and own a car. So if I can prove that I substituted a car journey with a bicycle, should I get some of the money back as a rebate? As I’m :
- Using about 2000kg less on the road
- It’s better for the environment
Did you think about that WB2? That cycling people are actually car owners too?

Yup.. nor fuel duty either..

Interesting that more people are arguing with me that cyclists shouldn't pay road tax. Than people arguing Owen Jones didn't have an ass whoopin coming.

Looks like you didn’t have any response re road tax on:
Car owners who also cycle
Cars that don’t pay tax or pay a reduced tax
Your simple argument fails.

Not all. But I'm happy to concede that if you're already paying road tax as a driver, you shouldn't have to pay again for a bicycle. However your registration should also go on your bike, so everyone knows who is responsible for the bike.
