Somebody is going to be crowned the Champions of Europe when the qf/sf are one leg each in a neutral venue with no crowd.
Thats bad enough without one of the last 8 losing its best player at a stage that it couldn't usually happen. Its so far removed from the original format that it shouldn't be considered the same competition.

Sorry no sale. Leipzig chose to sell him before the end of the competition when they didn't have to. For me it's the same as if they decided to drop him because he was "unsettled" due to transfer speculation.

I'm sure if Spurs were still in the mix you would be desperate for the competition to continue under the changed format.
And that’s a bigger difference than a player not playing in the remaining games of the knock out stages. Not sure why it bothers you that much. It’s really not that big a deal.

This is Leipzigs own choice. They’ve clearly accepted a higher fee in exchange for Werner not risking injury. They did a similar thing with Keita. We paid a higher fee to secure his transfer and for Leipzig to not entertain other offers.
So they clearly value their finances more than winning trophies. There’s nothing unfair about it.

We are not going to agree on this which is fair enough but if I was Atletico Madrid I would be very happy Werner isn't playing in the qf.
Had it been played at the correct time he would have been (injury permitting) and that changes the tie dramatically and wrongly in my opinion.

I would have to play but at no point have I said anybody should pull out.
Money has been the driving force behind footballs restart and nobody can afford to turn it down hence why Sky were able to hold the Prem clubs to ransom.
To be honest if the season, which includes European competitions, has not finished yet, then Werner should be nowhere near Chelsea until the season has officially finished.

Thank you Sandy I can't believe that anybody would argue differently.
It also makes me wonder about Werners character. I'm sure most players would want to finish their cl adventure with Leipzig before leaving.
As I said last night cl qf don't come around very often for clubs like them and their fans must be livid with the owners for not insisting that he stayed until their season was over.
Obviously that would normally be the case but we're in an unprecedented situation so whatever.

Unfortunately, as has been shown in this thread, your argument doesn't really stand up to scrutiny.
RB Liepzig are under no obligation to play any particular player in any given match. They have a squad to choose from and should be allowed to choose from that squad. If Werner was still at Liepzig they would be completely in their right to not play him for any reason whatsoever and this wouldn't ruin the integrity of the competition any more than selling him would.
Variants of this debate come up relatively frequently; often when managers moan that a different club has played a "weakened team" against a rival. The manager is allowed to play any permutation of registered players that they want.
If we accept that changing a team doesn't ruin the integrity of a competition then we have to accept that changing a team through a transfer doesnt ruin the integrity of a competition.

If the competition had been played to its original schedule Werner would have been available for selection until Leipzig were finished.
Therefore it is not the same competition as he has been allowed to leave. I bet Atletico can't believe their luck.
No problem with him leaving but he should have honoured the whole of the 19/20 season first.
It's not as if he can play for Chelsea in the competition.

So if he had remained at Leipzig, but the club decided they won't play him anymore in order not to risk injury and jeopardise the potential lucrative deal with Chelsea, would you be happy with that?

But it’s not normal circumstances. So complaining about things being done differently is a bit silly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Somebody is going to be crowned the Champions of Europe when the qf/sf are one leg each in a neutral venue with no crowd.
Thats bad enough without one of the last 8 losing its best player at a stage that it couldn't usually happen. Its so far removed from the original format that it shouldn't be considered the same competition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure if Spurs were still in the mix you would be desperate for the competition to continue under the changed format.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Spurs were still in it I would be thinking how typical of us to do well in the cl in a year where it doesn't count for sh1tt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So if you were Levy what would you do? Quit the competition?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course not.
However I would object to the way the competition is being completed.

Sorry no sale. Leipzig chose to sell him before the end of the competition when they didn't have to. For me it's the same as if they decided to drop him because he was "unsettled" due to transfer speculation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
UEFA should have ensured that he couldn't join Chelsea until Leipzigs season was over as would normally be the case.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Leipzig were adamant he must complete all their remaining matches then perhaps you might have an arguable point. But they were quite happy to let him go early, so your argument, which even Leipzig are not bothered about, makes no sense at all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We are not going to agree on this which is fair enough but if I was Atletico Madrid I would be very happy Werner isn't playing in the qf.
