Curious to know if those saying that the answer is Shearer comfortably were old enough to watch Lineker play?
Not a dig, just interested.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cinci and Geoff are old enough to remember the first English international, never mind Linekers career.

Caught the end of his career with Spurs and England, but I think Shearer had more strings in his bow as a striker. I don't really agree Shearer is miles ahead though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair dos.
Always hard when comparing players from different generations as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------Lineker was a bit more of a poacher though wasn't he? Not that Shearer wasn't but when I think of Shearer I think of powerful volleys, shots, free kicks...I don't see all that with Lineker. Maybe he did have that?

Not in the list, but Rooney > Kane. And Shearer probably.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rooney a better player but a better striker? Only 2 seasons of getting above 20 goals.

Shearer was a better all round player than Lineker. Had more to his game and scored a bigger variety of goals. In terms of an out and out goalscorer though, I haven't seen many better than Lineker. His movement to get away from defenders and find space was unreal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Very brave player as well.
Spurtle (U1608)
You're right, he was - but that was just his game.
For me though it's the level he did it at, and the range of clubs, that trumps Shearer.
I loved watching Lineker.
Shearer easily.
Defoe ffs.
And there's me think Jamie Vardy was the best striker of all time. At least that is what Sky and the Beeb keep telling us.
Oh well, you learn something new every day don't you.
Lineker was a great finisher but he needed the dirty work doing for him, Shearer was just a beast and created a lot of goals for himself and was never afraid to hit it from range
Defoe I don't think would make a top 10.

The only one I've seen say this is that deluded Leicester fan arro.
No mentioned Robbie Fowler? For me the most natural striker England has produced and criminally under used by England.

I'd say Shearer relatively comfortably from the OPs list and I remember Lineker at prime, his movement was absolutely exceptional. I'd still say Shearer was comfortably the better striker. Was quicker (pre-injury), stronger, better in the air, better passer and scorer a greater variety of goals. Was a threat in more areas of the pitch basically.
I think Rooney was a much better footballer than Shearer but as an out and out striker, I'd still pick Shearer.

Agree with that. Shearer wasn't afraid to go and get his head on the ball, Lineker was. Didn't he duck a header against Argentina in the QF?

Deities not allowed.
Fowler wasn't underused by England, he just never stepped up.
He also had a very, very short spell at the top. 2 or 3 seasons really.
Fowler didn't live up to his early promise like Owen, due to injuries and whatever else.
going further back..keegan was a real top player
Ferdinand rarely mentioned in these things. Pretty decent record back in the 90's.
kerry dixon
phenomenal scoring rate for chelsea
best english CF ever
probably Jimmy Greaves

Fowler's breakthrough and peak coincided with Shearer's best form. Shearer was the better player and his partnership with Sheringham worked well.
Unfortunate timing rather than criminal underuse imo.
