Greavsie was only 30 when he left Spurs, just about peak age for any top level modern day striker. Remarkable he scored all of those goals, lots at a very young age. 200 league goals by the time he was 23.

Greaves definitely one of the best in his era but the 2 eras (Greaves era and the PL) are so far apart and different it's hard to compare them. It's bad enough having Lineker in this debate.

I agree cannot really compare Prem era with Greaves or Dean era. Prem era players have everything going for them.

Could you imagine Shearer or any modern day Prem player, playing with a ball that weighed a ton, playing on pitches ankle deep in mud with those heavy boots. Oh and getting some brutal on the field treatment from opposition defenders. See fella it work both ways.

Seeing your comment Sandy made me smile at a memory. My grandad used to play top division football and once described modern football to me as "fairies kicking a balloon in slippers".

He was half joking but there's a truth there - the game is so different today. He was insistent that the great players from his day would still be great players in the modern era though because whilst defending and goalkeeping has improved beyond recognition, the fitness, nutrition and conditioning today would compensate. Talent is talent, as he used to say.

100 per cent mate. Although I am not sure how an half time ciggie would go done now.

Although I have been watching football for a very, very long time, I would have loved to have watched football from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and before. It must have still been a great watch, with massive crowds in attendance.
