The myth of the Lampard underdog story

If you factor in that Maureen was in charge of Spurs also, then you can see why they'd be odds on to finish in the top 4 and it was no surprise

Wahl the only one to see the truth yet again. Who knew?

Also worth noting that the likes of Arsenal and Spurs had huge drop-offs while Utd tread water despite a strong end to the season

66 making a team 4 points clear of 5th is ridiculous

I love the fact that many fans who wrote Frank off before the season started going as far to suggest he'd be sacked by the end of the season are now jumping on this bandwagon.

He's not done bad in his first year in the top flight, now let's see how he does with a real chance to shape a team rather than look after someone else's.

Hazard was a massive loss bro. Pulisic didn’t kick off up until post Covid. Mount, James Tomori & Abraham were playing championship level the year before.

I didn’t expect Chelsea to finish top 4, as did expect both Spurs and Arsenal to be this bad last season. By all accounts it was a strange season. Lampard has achieved more than it was expected of him in his first season at top flight, considering all factors.

The real test will come next season, if all transfers happens, he’d get all prime targets, the expectations will imminently be a lot higher than last.

Franks done an alright job, definitely hasnt overperformed.

He's done well for his first season at Chelsea. Huge question marks still though, especially in defence where Chelsea conceded goals for breakfast.

I'll gladly say hes done well ,because he has. But some Chelsea fans think he's turned water into wine this season.

Agreed. He's done a decent job, but I hear constant refrains of "no one (pundits, bookies) predicted us to get top 4" - not true - and "transfer ban", which ignores the £100m spent on kovacic and pulisic, and the £100m + of loan talent brought back to the club.

You are correct it is not right that no one predicted us for top four, I believed it was possible but that was never certain and I would never have predicted it because we also had lost Cahill and Luiz, Cahill hadn't played much but replacing three very experienced players was not an option due to the ban. This is likely why few predicted us to finish top 4.

How do you work out the £100m + of loan players coming back to the club ? All of these players were plying their trade in championship, and all came from our academy.

i know they were your players, that's why they were out on loan. i meant "£100m worth" - if abraham were a villa player, and he was the 2nd highest scoring player in the championship, what price would they stick on his head if you came knocking? both he and mount had been called up by england before returning from loan, and zouma had more PL appearances than maguire.

so i know they were your players, but it still doesn't make it any more true to say that lampard had the "same squad as before minus hazard plus pulisic".

But we didn't build a squad of championship players. We took a squad that finished 3rd and won the Europa League, took away one world class player, added Pulisic (not world class, but not too far off that level) and then added the loan players from the Championship (+Zouma)

How that equates to a midtable level team, I don't really understand.

Where would you put Luiz in that? Or Cahill for that matter even though he didn't feature much the previous season but still would have been a huge influence given his experience.

They were championship players, deemed not good enough for pl lower league clubs, let alone for a team competing for top 4. Hazard was colossal miss for Chelsea. You think Pulisic filled his void last year ? He’s still 21 years old and new to the league. Chelsea would be hoping he’d one day be some as good as Hazard.

We replaced Luiz with Zouma, equal exchange.

This is desperate.

It's the same squad apart from all the changes tbf.

Ridiculous that my comment asking if Lampard has done a better job then Mourinho this season gets deleted

Lampard did a good job last season. Can still do a lot better. Let’s see how he does with some potentially world class players added to the team.

I'll give you a chance to be sensible and not antagonistic towards me.

18/19 squad = 3rd place squad
- Hazard
- Luiz
- Higuain (doesn't matter)
- Cahill (doesn't matter)
+ Pulisic
+ Zouma
+ other Loan players
= midtable squad?

Does this make sense?
