Independence!

I would 100% vote for independence. I'm fairly left wing and don't generally live nationalism as a concept. But I don't feel that the Westminster government benefits us West of the Severn at all.
I think we'd be much better off managing our own affairs.

Of course no-one will think less of you
. But I wanted to stay in the EU, because we are stronger together. The same applies to the UK in my eyes. Sorry Diafol.

Apart from the potential economic consequences I dont see why Wales can't go it alone.

What the latest polling on Welsh Independence? They seem to be behind Scotland in terms of the appetite for it.

I’m in South Wales right now. (New bwahaha). Would your country have much of an economy if it went alone? Having seen the stupidly strict covid lockdown you guys are going into now would you even want that lot to get more power?

Obviously it doesn’t matter what this Aussie thinks but fwiw I reckon you’re stronger as part of a Union and Welsh people are basically English people but with a different accent.

I don't think it's likely to happen anytime soon, but 10 years ago there was next to no appetite for it. It is starting to gain momentum, but it is well behind Scotland

Build a tunnel under England linking Scotland and Wales so we can be one independent country and make England pay for the tunnel then build walls on the borders and make them pay for those too. There could be a tunnel/bridge from Wales to Ireland and a tunnel/bridge from Scotland to NI as well so we can be one big happy family. England can pay for those too.

You and the Scots will do good to get yourselves as far away as possible from the right wing English nationalism that’s been building up here over the last 5 years.

I don’t think they’d get away from it tbh. In theory a country breaking away from a union would get even more insular to outsiders.

It would be a complex issue. Obviously any kind of hard border with England would never work. But simply not being governed by Westminster would allow Wales to actually try and regenerate our economy.
I think it would probably be some sort of situation where Wales was still part of the United Kingdom, but governed almost exclusively from the Senedd

Lets have a federalised Celtic Union. Lets invade the Isle of Man too so we can have our own tax haven.

I'm for the lockdown to be honest. It needed to be done.

As for your second paragraph Robb... We were the original Britons!

Scotland should be independent
Wales should be independent
Northern Ireland should be independent
England should not have to support members of UK and vice versa.

United Kingdom of Great Britain is outdated

We have the same thing in Australia with Western Australia. (Some of them) want to break away but that really would be a huge blow to our economy as a huge amount of our economy comes from the mining industry there.

It’s very possible that in the future a lot more places break away from large entities like California, Texas, Catalonia, Western Australia.

Might even be better for some of them as local government might be more able to spread that economic jam less sparingly.

i dont see how it benefits most ordinary ppl to break up countries into smaller entities tbh

the sharing of resources that bigger countries have, should lead to greater prosperity

also how does socialism lend itself to such nationalism ?

unless you are a national socialist , like old adolf

I'm with you there. The UK 'union' will never be a balanced one as one country within it is so much larger than the others combined.

I'm not asking to break up a country. I just want Wales to run its own affairs. Is the UK even a country? Is it not a nation state?

scotland and wales were conquered by england at some point ?

if not it's not colonialism

Controversial but let’s just unite Ireland.

Two countries in the United Kingdom both have different ideologies and beliefs to England, it’s literally the complete opposite of being ‘United’. How does that fare for the future exactly? The gap has been widening year after year, especially in Scotland.

so what you want is the situation the basque country has within spain ?

they have their own parliament, police and even control their fiscal stuff...they pay no taxes to madrid

cataluna has almost the same situation, except they pay taxes to madrid (which was the route cause of the independence movement)

and you think scotland being outside the union, as an independent country would be better off ?

a wealthier country for all its citizens

We all know why the UK was created and it served a purpose, in the 21st Century it no longer serves that purpose.

Likes of Scotland and Wales deserve the right to "fully" govern its state and I think there would be far more stronger economic ties between members of UK if they were fully independent from one another.

You have my backing DC
