Agree to some extent but ANY player offside no matter where they are is on the defenders radar and if that is the rule then make it the rule any player offside means it is offside.

If the rule is staying as is and the offside must affect play in some way then you can't say that if Mane had not been there that the outcome would have been materially different. The ball still goes through to Jota 1 on 1 and he still scores.

Wow. Scrapping the bottom of the barrel here.

But Mane has no impact on what happened in that regard. It's not like Mane was over to the side so the keeper had to hedge his bets and cover the possible pass. He tries to close down the shot that was clearly coming Mane or no Mane

Ultimately I agree that the rule is stupid. For me it should be it is only offside if you touch the ball OR it is offside if any attacking player is offside (maybe unless they are just offside for a shot not a pass)

If it's a guy who's offside and nowhere near what's happening, i.e. near the corner flag, then it can maybe be OK, but Mane was so obviously affecting play as he's right in the keepers eye line and distracting defenders as they're obviously all keeping and eye on him waiting for him to run back onside etc

Liverpool are relentless when searching for a winner. Reminds me of Fergie vintage. They are also so selfless especially Mane, something you hope other teams will learn. The hammers had an opportunity earlier to go one up but Fornals did not pass the ball to his teammate who was in a better position.

Klopp has done a fantastic job building a culture where the attackers dont care who is putting the Ball in the net

You have to explain how Mane is interfering with play first. The pass wasn't to him, he didn't play or attempt to play the ball, he didn't prevent an opponent from playing the ball.

Exactly.
There are instances when this rule can look silly, this wasn't one of them.

no it needs to be hard and fast either way in my opinion. Here Mane had no massive impact and you are exaggerating the problems he caused either the defenders or the GK.

You must be an absolute thicko to not see how Mane is not interfering with play 😂
If he's not interfering with play wtf is he doing on the pitch?

that contradicts your earlier statement about a player on the other side of the pitch. Mane strolls casually back and ignores the ball because he knows he is offside if he touches it. 2 seconds earlier he was trying to interfere with play but then realises he can't.

You're the one coming across as an "absolute thicko" I'm afraid

Interesting that you jump straight to personal insults, but you are still completely incapable of articulating how he is interfering with play (which has a specific meaning in the laws of the game) beyond him standing in the pitch.

Allison was on the pitch too, was he interfering with play during that goal?

Embarrassing.

Surely that foot high lunge from Mane is a cert red card Of course, Liverpool got away with one there!

Tend to agree that he’s interfering myself, although the law has been messed around with so much I don’t know what the technicalities are any more.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball or
clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

It’s the line of vision part that could have played a part here.

But not a clear and obvious error by any stretch, mainly because it’s a matter of opinion.

But the line of vision only applies if it prevents an opponent from playing the ball. The only player whose line of vision was affected would be the keeper, and they would then need to assume he was capable of playing the ball before Jota if Mane wasn't there
