McT and Fred aren’t specialist destroyers. I’ve seen the term used to describe both, and that’s not how their games have been developed, not how Ole has used them, and not what he wants from the midfielders in his double pivot.
If Pogba is to be replaced and with a player that Ole and his team recommend, it’ll be someone who is positionally and tactically intelligent and can get involved physically and break up play; but who can also move the ball forward quickly and accurately, through the press, between the lines and over the top, and can help support attacks and recycle the ball quickly and incisively.
Ole wants generalists in the pivot.

Finding this kind of cm is difficult. That Ole was playing Pogba in cm, however, does suggest that ability on the ball is important to him. Similar with Matic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I was talking with Mike about this on another thread and pointed out that Ole demands a lot from the CMs in his system
I think a lot of that is down to what’s behind them. We need midfielders that can do everything because the defence aren’t the best at defending, nor are they the best at progressing the ball.
It Man United had Liverpool’s back five we’d be fine with a workmanlike midfield of Fred and McTominay.

Allison is fantastic with his feet, but just their fullbacks would do it, really.
Our first choice CBs are both pretty decent at bringing the ball out.
I don’t think they’re that good, though. Certainly not compared to the very best ball playing cb’s. But they are less of an issue here than the keeper and full backs. And Fred and McTominay.

Compared to the very best, maybe not. But they’re both above average, Maguire particularly.
City have better ball playing and carrying CBs, but beyond them, with VVD out for Liverpool, I’d put our pair next in the PL.
Matip and Gomez are better. So are Luiz and Gabriel. Thiago Silva for Chelsea. Alderweireld for Spurs. The latter have issues with their cb partners, but those two named are a different level to ours so they can get away with it. Even more so when their full backs are better at progressing the ball.
It’s one of the problems we’re going to have if Ole is replaced with someone that wants to play out from the back. Ole’s failed to build a back five and midfield that is up to the level of the very best. Better coaching should help, but it can only go so far.
I’d put Maguire up above all of Matip, Gabriel and (2020 version) Aldeweireld for progressing the ball. Gomez I haven’t seen enough of.
But I know we rate Maguire very differently
He really isn’t. Especially Alderweireld, he’s one of the best around. Maguire’s ball playing abilities have always been massively overrated.

Amazing how some people rate our cbs highly yet others do not.
I honestly can't see what people see in Maguire and Lindleoff, they're both sh!te for Man Utd standards.
They'd suit clubs at mid table level.
When I look at defenders who have come and gone.
The likes of Johnny Evans are better than Lindleoff, possibly on a similar level to Maguire.
Smalling is better than all of them - always rated him highly as an actual defender, not this 'hes great at long ball' but can't actually defend(Maguire+lindletoff) malarky.
Michael Keane is way better than Lindleoff, I'd also rate him above Maguire.
Phil Jones, once upon a time he showed real class, but that lasted for about a season, if that. For years he has given us pure comedy when playing - actual real good comedy. Perhaps that is why he is still at the club.
Comparing our current two main cbs with the likes of Vidic, Stam, Rio, Bruce, Pallister, they are absolute hogwosh..... They'd be lucky to make the bench if we had any of the above.
Rosso to answer your question about who'd replace them? God knows. Outside of United I don't know that many players.
I'm sure there are some gems around that we can get for cheap.
There are bigger issues in the United team than the cb partnership of Maguire and Lindelof.

Much.
It’s been this way for years. Though before we’ve not managed to actually create a proper cb partnership due to most of them being injury prone.
