What a strange article. People clapping may also be doing the things you list such as donating to charities. Seems a decent enough gesture.

Only thing I’d agree with is it would be hypocritical to do the clapping then go out and break the rules. Even if lockdowns have been proven to not work,

If you think it's strange, maybe read the replies and you might begin to understand it.

We've got Tom funding the NHS, Rashford feeding the kids, but who is going to step up and get the potholes fixed on my road?

I won't be clapping this time. Last time round there was a lady on our street who started walking up and down the street, then naming and shaming houses that didn't participate on the facebook group for our housing estate. This was the same lady who always has her wider family round her house breaking lockdown rules and claims to work as a nurse on a Covid ward (there are rumours she is a veterinary nurse ).

We moved to doing the applause in the back garden so we didn't have to see her and then stopped altogether a few weeks later. A shame really as the first week it was really good and my brother works in an ICU, so I had wanted to do it.

Wish all the clapping idiots would do carers a real gesture and not vote for parties that don’t give 2 fecks about NHS and the health care workers

My mum is a nurse and works in ED and on Covid wards throughout this, she thinks exact same. Was nice to start with, but her and other health workers would much prefer this energy was put on pressuring the government to pay carers what they deserve. Not do a clap for 1 min, go back in say what a great job Boris is doing, moan about NHS waiting times, then happily back a party who’s stripping of the NHS over last 10 years has contributed greatly to the mess we’re in now

Some people are just awful and the last few years has put a spotlight on it. Imagine being so petty as to go on FB shaming people for something like that

Fack me, that is unbelievable and yet feels so typical these days.

I won't be standing out there and anyone who has anything to say about it will get the appropriate response.

Think the notion comes from good intentions to support staff who really are on the front line and to garner a sense of community spirit and togetherness which again I am behind.

Unfortunately as is usually the result from good intentions, they get hijacked by busybodies who would cause an argument in an empty house or who live out their lives on Facesnap or Tw@tface in some supercilious holier than thou manner which supersedes the original decent idea.

World is full of them and they tend to just ruin it for others

Can you give us a list of the parties that don't and do care for the NHS please.

Just so I know if I can be a smug bastird or not when it comes to who I voted for.

Let's be honest, it suits most people to do next to nothing (stand and clap for a minute, post on social media) and feel like they've done something they can be proud of, than to actually get off their backside and do something.

Having real purpose only counts when it costs you something.

I didn't partake in much of the clapping for frontline workers we had here, but it was kinda nice as people were stuck indoors all day then got out onto their balconies and had a bit of a laugh together.

I don't have any issue with that part of it but the hypocrisy of it with certain people can be really frustrating.

Most of all my problem lies with the government who have latched onto it and tried to make it a thing, while the actual actions they make regarding the NHS suggest they have no respect for it or the people who work there at all.

Don't see the issue it's just a nice gesture showing our appreciation for those who are doing a fantastic job under the current circumstances.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a nice gesture the first time.

But now it's been turned into an organised event and people just have to take it too far don't they?

There'll be fireworks as well of course, which will scare the dog.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not being funny mate but nobody cares about your stupid dog either. I was on an FB group for our village and there were people on there moaning that fireworks were scaring their dogs - on Nov 5th for facks sake
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you don't care about dogs then it says more about you than me, to be fair.

Did I ask you to care specifically about dogs?

But thanks for your input anyway and your invitation to shut up.

I've decided to ignore you and carry on as I am, but really appreciate you taking the time to write your post.
