Yeah I’m not sure what it is, maybe Frank was more box to box, and tactically minded to his role, Bruno floats around and presses and really owns those spots between half way and the penalty box

Rui Costa, very similar style of play, I think he has also said he was his idol.

Costa didn’t score many though. Certainly not at Milan.

Yep; basically, Bruno plays in the final third.
Liam Brady.
Not quite in that league (yet), but the closest I can remember.
He will face a backlash in the same the way footballignoramii naysayed Pogba. The most ignoramic still do.
They can, and should be, verily lampooned.

Was Lampard more box to box? He was usually the furthest forward of 3 with 2 hardworking CMs behind him. I'd have said that they operate in the same areas.

Maybe because he is English so the comparison does not come up immediately but Frank Lampard is the answer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not a bad comparison, but I dunno, something not quite there. Can’t put my finger on it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That has to be the worst example.
Lampard was an ordinary footballer in an extra-extraordinary team.
Go to the back of the class immediately.
And as for the crap about being English........
That's WHY he was so over-rated

Can you speak English please for those of us who started supporting us when we became successful? What is a Liam Brady and why should he be considered in the same sentence as Bruno?
I would've likened Bruno to Gerrard when he was at Sporting certainly but his role is a bit different for us than it was for Sporting or is for Portugal.
Rui Costa was better with the ball at his feet, he was a better dribbler and played with more skill and flair.
As for David Silva.

Yeah, Bruno isn’t really a dribbler.
I’d argue his flicks, round the corner passes, backheels, chips and the like show as much flair as Costa. Costa just did more of it on the move.
He often had more space to play in and more open defences than Bruno does most weeks though.

Yes this was a large part of why I said Gerrard - Rosso is obviously right that Bruno at United plays a very different role to what we associate with Gerrard but I think that's just because of the way he's deployed rather than because they're fundamentally different players
Liam Brady was better than Bruno facing goal - more elegant running with the ball, a better dribbler. I don't associate him (though it was a hell of a long time ago and memories are leaky) with some of the things Bruno excels at - those first-time passes and flicks around the box.
I’d argue his flicks, round the corner passes, backheels, chips and the like show as much flair as Costa. Costa just did more of it on the move.
------------------------------------------------
Costa showed more flair on the ball than just the way he passed it.

Yeah, absolutely
Bet Bruno’s got sloppier since working with Phelan as well.

Rooney post-2009.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I still think Rooney is the best comparison, for a whole bunch of reasons
One of the major differences is that Bruno doesn’t continually play a ball out to the right whenever he gets it like Rooney started doing. Usually because there’s no cuuuuunt there.

And when there is, why would he just want to watch AWB miscontrol his pass into touch?
Usually because there’s no cuuuuunt there.

Rooney would love to play with Aaron Wan-Valencia.
He’s absolutely nothing like Gerrard 🤣🤣
To be fair, AWB doesn’t have a bad first touch. It’s the second, third and fourth that look like he doesn’t want to burn his feet with the ball.
