What do you expect a few hundred police to do with several thousand fans intent on breaking the rules?
This whole blame the police, blame the government approach is pathetic. Peopel are responsible for their own actions. To charge every person would take days. Charging a certain amount will hopefully deter others from doing it again in future.
Anyone found to be orchestrating things will be fined £10k
A few hundred police cannot charge every single person there and then. They cannot arrest every single person there and then, it is not practical. Their best approach is to form a barrier and try to contain the crowd to a certain area. If the idiots in the crowd choose to go en masse then all the police can do is make sure they do not carry out further issues until they disperse. It is in effect riot control.
A lot of experts in policing, covid control and legalities of everything these days.
As I said the other day, why did water cannon go out of fashion? Won't stop it, won't immediately disperse it, won't result in any arrests but a thorough soaking through in the cold will certainly have an impact and make life as miserable as possible for any serial law breakers as these 'events' make it for the vast majority of others.

Ok since you are an expert tell us what the police should do with thousands of people deliberately breaking the law?
Use last week's gathering at Ibrox then move to George Sq as an example.
We can then ask admin to pass your genius idea to the Chief Constable

Also missing the title point if it ends up being an issue its a police issue not a football issue and particularly not at the door of the clubs playing the match

ah so have a few more police. So out of 16k police officers across all of Scotland more should be taken from their local areas and their jobs of keeping that area safe to arrest a few more in a crowd.
Why didn't the police leaders think of this?

Your point was also
"Its their domain, if it was any other area of society they would have to deal with it so just do your job."
Just do your job
The job you seem far more knowledgeable on that the police themselves

The Polis were joining in the party at George Square ffs

I'm sure the latin phrase on the police uniform translates as "No pyro, no party"
Set up arrest zones well away from the stadium with social media as it is am sure numbers would drop dramatically those who actually proceed to the ground

Ok I'll ask again
Using last week as an example what would you have done better as a leader of police?

Hey I live somewhere that hasent has a community spread case of covid in a year . AM sure you all know how to deal with the crap
you are going through better than me.
Again did anyone read the title lol
Last week was a joke because of covid. Nobody got harmed, a few scuffles which is the norm for a drunken night in Glasgow. a few idiots damaged benches and smashed the glass door of the Celtic shop. A lot of rubbish was left.
What should the police have done? Let's be honest covid was the biggest law break last week. So JAscot's solution was to bring more police into an area then set up more areas to charge people.
In my opinion containing the dirty covid people to one big group and one big party place is far better than running all over the place
Ah ok Callsign, as I said initially had not heard anything regards it being outwith the clubs responsibility once they said dont come and offered no tickets.
That said heard and read plenty of people really angry about the covid issue
So its not actually as big an issue as the media make out people being in lockdown?
Look rangers had all the right messaging in place and agreed the plan well in advance with police and government.
Everyone knew it was going to happen, similar to Liverpool, Leeds and lesser extent Celtic.
Police plan would have been to contain.
Yes in an ideal world the players and staff would not have celebrated at the windows but if you can't understand why they did then you ain't a football fan or just a rubbish wum. If anything those celebration would have helped the police contain the event.
Callsign is correct that the best approach in that situation is containment which is what they did.
Rangers had the tannoys blaring telling folk to go home.
Where this has become an issue is purely the government looking for a nice handy distraction.
Why the met police in London thought it was a good idea to forcibly arrest women protesting violence against women is a different matter and clearly a terrible decision.
Short of what rangers and Celtic are doing which is statements and videos telling people to stay in they have no more involvement or responsibility here.
