I’m a Gooner and I like Son, he’s a tremendous player and generally comes over as a nice bloke.
I would say, however, that the way he reacted yesterday was embarrassing (it’s not just him, most of them do it and they do it because the officials are weak and foolish) and if a man who gets paid a multi-millionaire salary gets a few nasty comments from racist morons then I can’t get excited about it. The vast vast VAST majority do not condone this behaviour and if Son really is upset about it then he needs to toughen up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
See previous comment about people condoning racism because he went down softly, as if 'cheating' in football is even a remotely comparable issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope, that’s not what I said - a total straw man.😑

Yes, people have right to be mad at Son for playacting but it's completely unacceptable to hurl racial slurs at him.

Facking keyboard warriors needs to get out more and stop hanging out in their parents' basement.

you are clearly a very clever person but your comments are completely miss guided. Like the guy above said, how much he earns should never be a factor in the conversation against hate.
the notion that he earns so much so should have a tougher skin, maybe he does but the damning effect of racism is not just felt by the direct recipient but others that look like him. That effect is even more powerful in my opinion when it happens to someone of great status like Son
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re misunderstanding my position, I’m saying somebody in his position with his resources and status is not the sort of person we should be worrying about - unless the actions go beyond mean words. There is no general support for attacks on him and to argue otherwise is BS. I am FAR more worried about how we improve the lives of poor children’s education and opportunities than this nonsense.

I almost feel sorry for people that feel the need to revel in their own bigotry. Saddly we don't have that luxury because of the damages this does

my colleague at work shared a story about her kid being racially abused and threatened in school in the last few months. Now that kid is asking for a personal alarm because of fear the abuse would escalate

That's horrendous. Just imagine being a child and feeling afraid of persecution just for who you are.

I sometimes have the impression that the younger generation is less bigoted than mine. I remember a lot of casual racism in my school, whereas based on what my kids tell me, their peers seem to be comfortable with diversity. But we live in a fairly Guardian-reading urban area so I guess I'd be naive to assume my anecdotal experience is representative.

I do not think anyone believes you support a personal attack. The comment the other poster made was clearly tounge in cheek. I don't think anyone is seriously that worried about Son. He will be sad to see such comments but he is probably better prepared to deal with adversity (mentally, resourcewise etc) than most of us as a successful EPL player. I think we agree on this much
Where we diverge is you feel because he is better prepared to deal with it we should focus more on those that aren't. My view is that there will be loads of kids who look upto Son and seeing their idol racially abused being normalised will have a profound negative effect on

I feel sorry for you for living in an inferior country.

What country is it that you feel is inferior to yours?

It's an important point you two are discussing, and you're both right about the fact that this sort of incident is profoundly damaging regardless of how it impacts on Son. Racist abuse is an act of violence against racial minorities in general.

reading my comment a question popped in my mind.
Is it healthy to portray people like Son as a "victim" of racial abuse or would it be more conducive to portray them in a more positive light (i.e conquerors that they are)
as a kid growing up I know I would hate to see my idol (my dad) reduced to the status of a victim. Just a question?

Back to the topic, sort of.

It is a shame that racist remarks have now overshadowed this incident.

It is my belief that VAR should be used by the powers that be to stamp out the kind of behavior we saw yesterday by Son.

It still irks me that Lamela is still running around after being shot by sniper in our last game against Spurs.

It's the Jose way. Win at all costs. I hated his Chelsea teams for the same reason.

Intelligent 's. That's what he was after. Players like Dier are halfway there.

I think Son stayed down because he knew he got fouled and by staying down made sure it was referred. We've seen incidents that have been clear fouls that were not even picked up by VAR previously. He had to ride it out even though I don't agree with it.

We've seen a lot of fouls given for flailing arms this season whether you like it or not.

That's a good question. I don't know the answer but my instinct is that we should focus on the unacceptability of that kind of speech rather than on framing the target as a victim. Whether it's Rashford or Son or Salah, he's one of us, we stand together, when it's a case of racial abuse. The focus should shift to how pathetic and isolated the abuser is.

'I'm not racist'

Goes on to say he's on bad terms with anyone who isn't from his country

I really find it hard to believe he's a genuine poster cos he's such a parody.

Anyway to the topic at hand there's not really much more to add, other than to add another voice to stand with Son. I can't imagine what it's like to go through something like this & also for young Asians growing up in this country who look up to Son and see him being treated like this. I don't understand how some people can be so driven by feelings of hatred, it just seems like a pathetic and exhausting existence to me.
