Sancho needs to play

I agree OP and I think he will. We need a spark and perhaps he's it.

It’s frustrating he hasn’t got on the pitch yet. Though I think my favourite thing about this England team is what a song and dance has been made about our full backs, and their quality with the ball and we’ve then proceeded to stifle them by using them in a defensive manner.

For all the dismissal of the media, Southgate continues the England manager tradition of playing the best individual 11 from their club form rather than a formula to win If HK is the captain and must play then find a formula that suits HIM. Otherwise drop him - what's he gonna do take the strop and walk out - don't think so?

No Kash. He needs to play because some of those ahead of him have been crap.

No he doesn’t. If that were true Sterling, Rashford, Mings and Pickford wouldn’t be playing.

Johnstone, Bellingham, Sancho, Grealish and Konsa would be in the team.

You always know when a manager is out of his depth, they pick the team to try and avoid losing rather than a team that will go out to win the game. Three 1-0 wins and a 0-0 in our last four games.

He makes this bleedingly obvious: doesn't play Grealish who is a great creative talent and one of the few players comfortable with the ball at his feet, keeps playing 2 holding midfielders, doesn't play Sancho despite him being in the best form of all our wingers, chooses another defender after TAA gets injured rather than any forwards or midfielders, takes 4 left backs.

The guy is boring and pragmatic and wasting all the forward talent we have.

England's best players are always the ones that aren't playing. It's just when they actually play that they're shiiite.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Always been that way. Nothing enhances an England players reputation more than being on the bench!

Sancho is arguably the second most productive player in the squad

Dortmund’s squad, not England. He’s yet to prove that. Against Czech would be an ideal opportunity
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tbf no attacking player will replicate their club form for England as long as Southgate is in charge. Sancho has more individual talent and tricks. He can beat players, win free kicks and create chances better than Sterling.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To an extent. England also don’t suit sancho’s style of play. Id put Bellingham in for rice too against the Czechs. Chillwell in for shaw/trippier. Maguire if fit. Sancho, foden possibly rashford upfront. Kane dosent look great.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

One of Grealish or Sancho has to start.

Starting a players with creative talent like make something happen on his own is the obvious thing to do when team is not creating chances.

I’d love to see Bellingham given a start, but there is literally zero chance of that happening. He won’t get a minute of playing time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why did SG select him then?

Mate, you're correct - bad choice of words - I meant form over last 3 years. Perhaps reputation would have been more appropriate? Imagine the (populist) press going to town on him if he left out your list? He's shatting it about being the next turnip.

It’s a balancing act when it comes to the lineup. Form for the national team and form for club comes into it. All nations have these troubles when selecting their team so it is what it is, it’s nothing unique to England.

As melton says, nothing enhances an England player’s reputation more than being on the bench. I’ve bigger issues with the approach with the players we have on the pitch, rather than the ones not playing.

posted on 20/6/21

And to be honest, I don’t think he’s shiiiiitting it about the press if he left those out as many in the press have called for it. He’ll probably get more criticism for not doing it, because Jack Grealish is the press golden boy at the moment and he’s not really bowed to that pressure. I don’t think he gives a shiiiiit about the press. He’s just doing what he thinks is best to get results. But that’s where his decisions are questionable, especially given how we are set up.

posted on 20/6/21

I do find it slightly odd that people have watched the first two games and think Sancho and Grealish are the answer, when our main problems are in the centre and fullback areas and how they’re set up.

posted on 20/6/21

I guess the hope is that they could put in some better individual performances. That’s far from a guarantee, though. And as you say doesn’t address those big issues in the team.

Just looks to me like he’s wanting to get the defensive structure set for when we have to face a good side in the knock out stages. But that’s risky when you suck the life out of your attacking threat.

……

I think Turnip is vey appropriate right now. Effing about in the two pre tournament friendliest with players who were not going to be in the tournament. WTF.

That is when the fool should have been sorting his systems out.

posted on 20/6/21

And it’s a pants defensive structure too.

posted on 20/6/21

Yeah, and just to make matters worse I’ve a feeling we’ll change to a back five anyway.

posted on 20/6/21

Ha! I thought he was going to against Scotland tbh. Probably should have done, he’ll change it when he shouldn’t instead.

posted on 20/6/21

My thinking is that he won’t want to break up the Stones and Mings partnership, but will want Maguire back in the team as well.

posted on 20/6/21

Yep, what I thought too. Think he’d want to keep Mings in as he’s making Pickford look good by dealing with most of the crosses too.

posted on 20/6/21

Maguire will help with that as well. Could be useful against a team like Portugal, less so Germany and France.
