The problem is the Scottish football culture in general. We've got a farmer for a manager who built a team to play farmyard football, with the only real "tactic" being "intae them!". If Clarke goes, the SFA will replace him with another dud with no imagination who'll talk up his "honest, hard working" players rather than attempt to play any sort of modern brand of football, because "let them know you're there early on" is about as deep as the hammer-throwing, tattie-field Scottish footballing philosophy gets.

You have 2 class fullbacks but both can't play in their preferred position at left back. Now I don't see that many Scotland international games, but have you ever tried playing one of them at right back?

Yes

Sorry but I’ve heard far too often that “we’ve a crop of talented youngsters coming through”.

In fact practically after every failed attempt which essentially is all of them.

Too cynical to swallow that sheite now.

And even after all those false starts, I'd rather we gave opportunities to young players who might not make it than old carthorses who never did.

Was gonna say the same earlier but didn't have the energy. KT is one - got in after fairly few 1st team games. Was struggling to think of any others.

An issue is even when we play notionally diddy teams, because we can't beat them convincingly the pressure is on from the off not to drop an points hence the reluctance. As a country, our psyche is so fragile and hollow that there is the belief a bad game and that's the end of their career - manager and young player!

I, and I think most people, would be far more forgiving of a young player making a mistake or having a bad performance due to lack of experience than a seasoned pro doing the same due to lack of quality.

Indeed, but the manager is paid, and under pressure from fans and media to win matches from the off. That is what does for them in the end - more so than the SFA who don't want to pay compo and the expense of finding a new one and start all over.

And this is exactly where we need leadership from the SFA. We basically need a DoF who'll say, our key strengths over the next few competition cycles will be in midfield and at full back and we want a manager to build a style around those strengths - even if it takes time - and to identify and bring in young players who will compliment those key players we have and the style we want to build - even if they make a few mistakes at first. They need to be upfront with whoever that manager is from the off and say we'll give you time to build in line with this vision as long as we're seeing certain key performance indicators along the way, and it doesn't matter if we miss a competition or two trying because we probably wouldn't have made them anyway!

Everything is so short-termist from the SFA at the moment that there's nothing for a manager to do but resort to agri-football in the hope of scraping through a play-off by trying not to lose.

I seem to remember some years ago, the Italians I think used the Euros to blood all their under 23s to make them experienced for the next world cup.....we could and should have done that to a fair degree. One game for Gilmour, seven fookin minutes for Patterson and no sight of Turnbull, Nisbet gets what ten minutes each game...truly pathetic management.

So Steve, disappointment at yet another major tournament?

Aye, I just thought I'd try guys that hadn't played before.

He'd get slaughtered and rightly so!

We had a manager that did that and he got binned though it might be he was a hvn with a lisp too.
