If being Villa are being this persistent surely the player has indicated he world have some interest in the move.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really, happens a lot when players are negotiating new contracts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not usually quality sources like Ornstein reporting on it though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He has reported on many bids where the player ends up signing a contract extension.

Villa haven't even made a serious bid yet so they're not being persistent as much as taking the p***

Yeah this. I find it impossible Villa made a second bid without some kind of encouragement from the other side.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. Arsenal fans can argue all they like but this isn’t football manager. Clubs rarely get into discussion without first checking if the player is interested.

So every bid ends in a player being sold? Happens all the time, clubs bidding for players - especially when the player is negotiating a contract - when in reality there is no chance of that bid being successful. It is agents trying to get more money, that is all.

Arsenal using the money to buy Maddison?

posted on 28/6/21

It could be a case of Villa testing the waters to see if Arsenal are willing to sell depending how contract talks play out between player and club. If ESR doesn't sign a new deal, it may prompt Arsenal to sell for £30m now rather than potentially let go on a free later down the line.

No but in the modern game I don’t anyone I’d making a bid before checking if the player had interest first.

But how they check is through the agent. Who is trying to get a new contract signed at his present club. So to do so the agent drums up interest elsewhere, to put pressure on the club to meet his demands for his player. Happens countless times every transfer window, and there is very little intention of a transfer from either the agent, the player or the club.

Maybe. Hard to deny there may not be a huge difference in attractiveness between Arsenal and Villa right now. Villa seem to be on the up and have already added a good player while Arsenal seem on a steady decline.

Villa having 1 good season doesn't make them a club on the way up, Wolves were the same last year and Sheffield utd etc . We're still a much better prospect to play for than Villa imo.

posted on 28/6/21

Villa being on the up is a bottom half finish and look likely to lose their best player.
Arsenals steady decline is finishing 6 points off CL.

If you're an Arsenal academy player and playing in the first team, there is no logical reason to be joining Aston Villa other than to test yourself in a completely different environment.

He's grown up here, all his friends and family are in London, he's a first team regular, he's an Arsenal supporter and, despite how awful we were last year, we still finished above Aston Villa in our worst ever Premier League season.

Very, very little sense in moving to Villa.

Villa do look like a club on the up, and Arsenal have had a steady decline, but their starting points are different and there are just different levels to what these clubs are.

Arsenal have been a bit of a mess on the pitch but they’re still an attractive prospect for many players. Different level but it’s been a similar story with United. Football players don’t view these massive clubs as negatively as fans do.

Villa are likely to sell their best player and finished 6 pts behind us. We have several players like Saka, ESR, Tierney, Martinelli and Partey who are highly likely to improve next season and apparently have money to burn this window.

How on earth are we in decline? On the up I'd say.

Honestly, all of this just reminds me of how arrogant Villa fans got back in 2008/09 when they nearly challenged us for top 4.

For context of ESR’s current market value (to Arsenal) consider we spent £28m on a then 18 year old French CB with half a seasons experience in Ligue 1.

So, not ‘PL tested’.

Not homegrown.

And, generally speaking, a ‘less expensive’ position to buy a player in.

£28m.

If you think Arsenal value ESR at £30m you’re off your rocker tbh.

Though I did read that Villa’s owners have seen the likes of Spurs and Arsenal as vulnerable to being overtaken by Villa if they can get their recruitment right. So after signing Buendia, probably think they can take the piiiiiss and sign one of Arsenal’s most promising young players.

I fully agree. They're trying to pick us off. Need to slam them by a lot of goals next season to make the point.

The Villa owner probably isn't wrong either, they've got money to burn and their recruitment has been good in recent windows. I don't think they are being unreasonable to think they could be within a shout of overtaking both Spurs and Arsenal in the next couple of seasons really. If Leicester can do it, I don't see why Villa can't.

They do really need to keep hold of their better players though.
