You loan a player that you paid £27mil to opposition teams in the same league to finish above arsenal...lol
Pretty frustrating if true; close to £30million spent on a player only for him not to kick a ball for the club for three seasons.
Even if he does impress Arteta enough to force his way into the team the following season, he'll return with just 2 years left on his contract, and you can't imagine he'd be eager to tie himself down to the club longer term given his lack of football for the club thus far.
It also gives me concerns about how we'll set up this season; with Mavropanos gone and Saliba reportedly on his way, you'd have to assume even if we do sign White, Holding will be the back-up RCB.
Now I think Holding is a good defender, but he's limited; he's not particularly comfortable passing out from the back nor does he have the mobility to allow us to press for a higher line and peg the opposition back. On the other side, Mari is a good ball-player, but again lacks the mobility to push for a higher line.
For all the talk of Arteta fixing the defence, he did so in a manner which saw us sit deep - stifling our ability to compress play and squeeze the opposition back in their own half.
And despite being lauded for his coaching abilities and the stats about our low average age, I feel very few youngsters have really progressed under him.
Saka and ESR are the obvious two (though I feel he really held off on integrating the latter for two long whilst we were functioning without any sort of creativity in midfield in the first half of the season), but we've seen Nelson and Saliba completely left out in the cold; Martinelli getting far less minutes than many were expecting on return from injury; essentially zero integration of talented Under-23 players such as Azeez and Balogun into the team; and whilst Willock has stepped up massively as of late, it's only under Steve Bruce's tutelage that he has done so - he's looked a shadow of the player he is proving to be at Newcastle during his time at Arsenal.
Then there are cases like Maitland-Niles, who to be fair, did appear to progress under Arteta during the latter stages of the 2019/2020 season, and I know many fans were happy we resisted the talk of a £20m transfer to Wolves.
But then there was seemingly zero plan for him; he spent the first half of the season basically sat on the bench, then got loaned to West Brom and with two years left on his deal, you can only imagine his value has dropped significantly from last year.
Really concerned about the club's strategy going forward. We were in the top 5 most valuable clubs in the world not so long ago, and now we find ourselves slowly sliding out of the top 10, with back-to-back circa mid-table finishes, a manager with zero managerial experience prior to joining us, and a man with very little experience in the role as our technical director seemingly being backed more than any of our other managerial teams have done before.
Sorry, a bit of a tangent from Saliba, but his time with the club (if you can really call it that) is a prime example of some of the mismanagement we've seen of the club as of late.

Its a thing of pride with Arteta. The guy is unbelievable arrogant.
Saliba deserves the chance to show what he is about in pre-season. He has a right to compete for a starting birth with all the other CBs at the club.
It’s utter shambles to pay £27 million for a player and three years on, he has not kicked a ball in a competitive game for the club.
I mean look at what Fofana is doing at Leicester.

The EPL clubs that showed interest were Newcastle and Southampton. When do those finish above Arsenal?
And I do not need to meet Arteta to make that assumption. His disposition kind of gives it away.

I am not sure thats how growing up works sunshine
It really is bizarre the way he's been treated to a lesser extent Martinelli as well. It does seem that players brought in under last regime are being shown door as quickly as possible. There does seem to be a level of arrogance within the current regime in that we'll they seem to be saying if we didn't buy your not good enough. We've got a very talented defender on our books and he's not even getting a chance its simply not good enough and a detailed explanation of this situation is required.
I'm not a fan of Arteta and the quicker he's moved on the better, Edu can go as well both are not good enough.

Why are you using that sort of language?
You are calling Arteta is an arrogant but in reality you have never met him before. That says all about you.

The EPL clubs that showed interest were Newcastle and Southampton. When do those finish above Arsenal?
And I do not need to meet Arteta to make that assumption. His disposition kind of gives it away.

I might argue that sending Saliba to the same club as Guendouzi might be a mistake given that they're good friends, and Arteta considers Saliba as someone who needs to grow up and Guendouzi as someone who never will.

I gave up on that last season after Arteta decided to publicly embarrass our top scorer for the last two seasons. I think at the moment he is doing what you expect from anyone who accepts a job thats too big for them. Survival.

That could be it. It could be part of his larger culture war (lol) at Arsenal and Saliba was famously good friends with Guendouzi, who was part of the clique we paid to leave.

Not sure how well Arteta could have got to know Saliba in the few weeks he was at Arsenal. Unless of course Arteta is a lazy bigot who just considers him the 'type'.

I should be clear that I would have handled Saliba completely differently. He has the talent to be the best in the world.
But, to suggest Arsenal only get information on his personality when he's physically present is daft.
