First time I flew over for a game in 98’ my uncle had to take me as I was a kid. Once I became an adult, it is either with the Mrs or alone. Must say I have enjoyed it on my todd.

I go to games with a couple of mates, meet another group of mates for a brew/beer beforehand but sit in a completely different part of the ground to any of them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did they change sections and not tell you?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They changed teams, they now watch Dumbarton.
From the late 60s through to the mid 70s I was generally accompanied, having the turnstile fee paid for me and having to be brought in by car or bundled into the back of a Ford Thames van.
After moving south, I would undertake the return journey to Filbo alone and some on the terraces were amazed I’d regularly come 130 miles for a home game. I would then travel back the same distance later that day. Those were the days when people spoke to you, unlike now.
For many years I’ve gone alone apart from the odd occasion with a work mate. The spouse has little interest in football, indeed the last time she sat down and watched a match with any enthusiasm would have been 1996 for the Germany Euro SF.
"bundled into the back of a Ford Thames van"
Sounds like you were kidnapped and forced to watch Leicester
I go on my own even European aways
I have a manic work life and need the me time

They were great days Posty 😀 Well, maybe…
The motor could be parked a few streets away from the ground (Jarrom Street). No chance now unless you are really lucky. Fond memories of the ball skidding off the garden shed-like stand roof on the Popular side and into one of the back gardens on Burnmoor Street.
Everyone having to come down the front of the main stand and walk pitch side as the exits were clogged. You daren’t go to the toilets in the lower Kop at full-time because you were stuck in there forever trying to get out with the mob leaving when the final whistle went.
Full stadium for first game of the season at home vs Leeds though
Will be taking his ST just to guarantee a ticket for that
Went to the CL alone in Madrid...loved it. Met a guy from Chicago...another from Australia and the lad who works for Barca TV...he was recognized quite a lot by the locals even though it was in Madrid.
As long as you are friendly and chatty it's all good.
Think I’ve only ever done it once or twice. Because I was in the same few seats for years, there would always have been people around who I knew to at least speak to. Probably less so nowadays.
But I will be doing it in anger for the first time this coming season.
Looking forward to a new experience in a new stadium, new football culture, songs in a different language, no idea what the food is like (probably salted cod in some form… ).
Really excited about it actually. Quite tempted to turn up for the first game as a full kit waaaaanker, just to see what kind of response that gets from the ultras
It can be hard. I used to go to the football at least once a year with my dad but, since I moved to Germany, he stopped going himself. I feel a small bit of guilt for that, because he is not the outgoing type socially.
If you're happy going alone, do so, but there's no shame in seeking people to hang out with. You seem to be a United fan so there should be between 65-70k likeminded people at every home game. Football is a chance to mingle. Make new friends. They don't have to be your best buddies of all time, just people to con refs into giving you another dodgy penalty with.
If you don't change you're already dead.

Making a joke that no one goes to games would work better if it didn’t come after 4 pages of people talking about their experiences of going to games.
