RR, is there an audiobook version of this article?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Apparently the daily mail are serializing the article over 8 weeks…
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It'll be on my podcast too if RR agrees to the terms.

When you spurned me, I knew one day you'd be back, on your knees, begging me for content.

Funny isn't it. A long, well thought out, sincere article.
I've just gone to give it five stars, and there are three one stars.

MU52 I don't mean this in a bad way but how would you think you moving to France differs to the Pakistani family moving into your community.

It's an interesting subject for me as I don't really care where people are from as long as they respect the local culture and are decent people. Like I'm certain you are from your posts on here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's different in as much as I speak French, had already worked over here, and we have a lot in common, football for a starter. Also my other half is French.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought that was the case MU52.

I was just confused when you wrote 'Further more despite living in France for over eleven years, I shout for England, never France, and feel English with no part of me French.' because that didn't sound much like what you've previously described before of your wonderful life there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do love France, but 1% less than England.

Talking of England I don't think this kind of thing (seen in the tweets below) help. I can understand English media getting excited but ours here are just stirring with this! Southgate and his players all seem very decent people which makes it all the more disappointing that media is whipping up a frenzy which they know will only lead to negativity.

I don’t get patriotism at all, but that’s just me, you’re born where you’re born, wherever that is doesn’t make you any better or worse than the next man ( unless they’re Scottish, French or German) if England win the Euro’s I’ll be buzzing all the same

I think as we experience this shared Euro2020 journey, the image of unity drowns out everything else, and it provides a clear demonstration that you can care about child poverty, and resist racism and homophobia, and feel no contradiction between that and unambivalently loving your country.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
That's it right there but 'we' keep getting played against each other (right and left) by the elite to constantly bicker about things and keep us distracted and broke. If we all have a common goal, then it is easily achievable, but the constant daily distractions we're fed will stop us from ever going anywhere as a people.

I think a bit of tribalism in football is fine when it comes to a tournament, it is all part of the game.

What I can't stand is when that tribalism is extended beyond that, like the absolute lowlifes that hate Andy Murray because he is 'Scottish'. We are all British and everything this country has achieved has been achieved hand in hand as a United Kingdom.

Yeah, I’ll be buzzing if England win because I’ve watched them fail all my life and they’re my local international side
But I don’t care for royalty, flags, historical naval battles etc

I've never thought of my own identity or politics in terms of patriotism. However, I've always fervently supported England in football. And it hurts when terrible things happen in this country - and to be honest, hurts more when they happen in familiar places than far away. I was in central London on the evening of the 7/7 attacks and had a powerful feeling of "they did this to my city". So even if I've never found the word patriotism particularly useful (as someone who is internationalist and pluralist in my outlook) it's clear that I do have something in common with those who do, that we feel a comparable kind of affinity for the place we live in.

That makes me think there's scope for a fairly large plot of common ground. I for one am happy to get on board with a patriotism that isn't exclusive.

It really is isn't it? My only slight quibble is that he mentions 'island' in there. England isn't an island. I know it's probably not deliberate on his part but many people see England = UK/GB which does grate a bit. There's always that grey area when the news talk about 'nation' or 'country' on the BBC/ITV news. Where exactly are they talking about?

I think most people are patriotic, even without realising it. I don't mean royalty or pageantry, although we do it well
But most people feel proud if someone has done something special from there Town, or won something important and they are English.
Which United fan isn't proud of Marcus, so which English person doesn't feel proud when an English scientist wins a Nobel prize.

That's why I think this England team has the potential to be quite culturally important, because it offers a new definition of patriotism. Hardly anyone in the country right now will stick their head above the parapet and claim they aren't patriotic, or they're anti-English, because we're having a moment as close to universal shared joyful experience as is possible in these atomised times. It's a living illustration that pride in England can be embodied in a group of talented, humble (multi-racial) lads, who see no contradiction between their pride in their love for their country and their stances against racism or homophobia or child poverty. In fact, it's part of the same continuum: you love your country, so of course you want to protect it from the scourge of racism. There's a continuum between the generosity of spirit you see in their progressive gestures and the generosity you see in the way they interact with random kids (e.g. Mason Mount going into the Wembley crowd to give his shirt to a little girl or Rashford's kindness on social media).

That's what I thought as well but phrases like 'celebrations around the country' were used the other night.

It doesn't really matter in such trivial things as football but they also do it when it comes to the more important matter of Covid regulations which differ from country to country within the UK.
